Doing some research, I've found that if you are using Asio, you might not be able to run 2 soundcards at the same time. I am also thinking it may be a sample rate issue too.
You can check the sample rate of the onboard soundcard by going to the control panel and opening "sounds" ... select the "recording" tab, Click on your soundcard and select "properties". Click the "advanced" tab and you should be able to see the recording sample rate. Anything less than 16 could cause a problem, but not neccessarily.
here is a good guide if you're using asio4all
http://flstudio.image-line.com/help/html/envsettings_asio4all.htm
I would look at the troubleshooting section that deals with crackling audio and note the "buffer size" segment. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

Not being able to use the M as a playback device is a weird one. What version of Windows are you using? _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

@Corey, I'm running windows 7 and it's a known issue that wasn't in XP, apparently. ASIO locks the sound channel.
@Kasey, This isn't a sample rate or software problem. As soon as the cables go into the board, the mic starts grinding. And it doesn't record this noise, just monitoring it through the headphones. _________________ Jeff

Quick question.
Is the M plugged into a preamped channel? |

I use Windows 7 and don't experience that- I just did a test recording in Cubase via my Fast-track, which is monitored on my mixer, while playing back an MP3 in Zune via the mixer. I also ran a test of recording in Cubase via ASIO, while at the same time recording via the same interface (although using the line in, not ASIO) in another program (SAM Broadcaster).
Both scenarios worked, no weirdness. I was surprised I could do the second one, but it did work.
Is it possible that it's something specific to ASIO4All? I use ASIO drivers specific to my devices, so I'm not sure about what ASIO4ALL might require. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Might just be the board.
How old is it?
Have you connected different devices to see if the problem recreates?
Have you tried different channel usage configurations?
I'm also curious to know if it happens if you only use channel 1 instead of 1/2. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

I've tried it in all channels: line in, tape in, 48v on and off. No difference. _________________ Jeff

Silly question: Are you using ASIO4ALL instead of the ASIO driver for the M because you need some feature in ASIO4ALL? _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Not a silly question. And the answer is no. But I couldn't get the Centrance ASIO driver to work in Audition. May go back to investigating that issue. _________________ Jeff

How does it conflict with system sounds? I ask because I have an idea if you want to try...you have the Audition input selected as the M in the "edit View" I assume, and you have the output selected as the USB as well. How about using the PC Soundcard as the output device in Audition? _________________ Does life start at 40? |

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. But in order to *hear* the audio from the soundcard, I need to run it through my mixer since that's where my headphones are. As soon as I plug those little cords in, the sound of the mic goes to pot.
Note: using the same cords from the PC, I was able to plug in a small MP3 player without the same issue occurring. So not ALL devices are causing this problem. _________________ Jeff

When you tried to use the CEntrance ASIO drivers, what was the issue you ran into? The current version is 7.0.3, updated 9/2010- if you tried it before then maybe the newer one will work better? _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow
