OH YES!! That woke me up out my usual lurk mode!
Steak and Kidney pie. The only remaining example of British cuisine that I still miss terribly. The only thing that can still convince me that God might be British after all. All my Japanese friends here think that eating kidney is disgusting. And this from a culture that eats cold, dead, uncooked fish.
I say..."Of course it's disgusting..it's British."

The best steak and kidney pie is made in Port Gordon by Chef Banks. It's a pie using shortcrust pastry containing cubed beef steak and chopped kidney (usually Ox) in a season gravy. When I have time I'll bake one, sometimes it's not for myself but for someone nearby who has expressed an interest. For those who don't like kidney I substitute chopped mushrooms.
Seeing Mike's post I'm wondering about the logistics and legality of exporting one of the above to Japan.

I'm sorry, but me Mum, a great cook, kept trying to feed me steak and kidney pie when I was younger, and damn, if the stuff didn't just smell like ox piss or lamb piss. Can't do it. Just can't do it.

Katrina, you can get anything in NY. I'm sure the local Gristedes or Food Emporium or even Whole Foods has 'em. Oppenheimer's on Broadway has 'em. Actually probably everybody has them.
My daddy used to cook them with bacon. Yum.
Not sure I would buy insurance from Geico but I love the ads. I love the little touches - the way the gecko leans against the tree and kind of slips and has to catch himself - no earthly reason for it but it's just so cute.
And I love cute. |
