Hey all,
It seems like not too long ago that I was on here looking for opinions on my mixed American/British narration demo. Well, I've since decided to separate them out so as not to confuse people and I just want to make sure the American demo sounds, well, American. One or two of the clips on here were really meant to be something more "in-between" and I just want to make sure it doesn't sound too dodgy.
Anyway, enough of my babbling here's the SoundCloud link.

Thanks!! |

I only heard one unusual pronunciation: farmlands. You said FARM-lunds which is common in other English dialects, but I always recall it spoken as two separate words here. Farm lands.

I heard a few "British-isms" -- "subuhb" instead of "suburb," "moduhn" instead of "modern," and a little British flair on the "o" in "photos".
Yer gonna haf tuh emphersize yer RRRRs, if'n yuh wanna sound 'Mericn...

Arrrghh! Better? lol, that's funny. I had to jump onto to forvo to listen to some of those pronunciations. Yep. I'm missing those r's. @Bruce I dunno if it's a British thing or a city girl thing. |

Hmmm... with my British ears, it sounded American
Interestingly enough, I had a late lunch on Sunday with three other VOs... at one point the conversation focused on the different enunciation of the "R" by Brits and Americans. The bottom line (apart from a severe beating due to my insistence that the Brit way was correct and the American way was over-enunciated) was that the difference can sometimes be very subtle. With a critical ear, I can hear exactly what Kristin is getting at.
I'm now sitting here repeating "suburb" to myself like an idiot _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

As mentioned, only a few subtle changes, and you're there! One more that I caught was "Icon" at the end. Americans tend to say the "con" at the end of icon as "ah" instead of the more British "Icawn"
I would have to say, if I wasn't listening critically, I wouldn't have know you weren't American. Very well done. I need to put together a British narration demo and have it ripped apart |

...and more correct.
I wouldn't be surprised if this sounds American to an English ear. Well done!
The words pointed out before were the ones that stuck out to me as well -- deal-breakers for my brain. Specifically "icon," "modern," and "suburb". "Family" also sticks out a bit to my ear, but I'm used to Californians with their sloppy diction.
It's funny sometimes; how American vs. English can be as simple as switching up the meter of inflection. |

It's more about mood than noise. I'm pretty certain we could get an American VO to post a clip claiming he or she was a Brit trying to sound American and they would be suitably picked free of nits.

The feeling of having been run over artfully by a car.
