I have a chance to pick up a refurbished Zephyr Xstream for 2k - OR I can go for a new Audio TX setup.

What do you think I should do?

Melissa,

I'm very happy with my AudioTX set-up, but that is a great price for a Zephyr Xtreme.

Zephyrs are super easy to use...but expensive to fix when they break.

Chuck's comment would be my concern too. Problem with AudioTX? Download it again. Problem with PC running AudioTX? A PC man will mend.

I discovered the above yesterday. If I was a Black Box codec owner driver I'd still be out of service now whereas I was offline for 4 working hours thanks to the PC AudioTX combination.

I can totally see running a little PeeCee specifically for Audio TX.

Make sure you get ATX from Dave Immer at Digifon, he's one of the few in the US who really knows the system and how to make it work. You'll need an ISDN modem and an NT1 adapter as well.

I spoke to him... he's actually a fan of the hardware boxes... hmmmm again. One advantage to a box is I actually know how to use it.

I agree with Dave... I don't endorse using ATX for ISDN unless you have a contact who's set it up and knows the ins n outs. I prefer a used Zephyr 9202 any day of the week, and they can be found for around $1200 these days.

In case you're still shopping, I can speak highly of my Musicam Prima LT. It's worked flawlessly for 5 years now. I don't do anything to it and it just works.

And it's PURPLE.

Be careful buying Zephyrs and the like on evilbay. They were a big favorite with the scammers for quite awhile.

I'm with George on the 9202. With due care they can last along time.

I always disconnect mine from the phone line and power when the studio's going to be idle for a day or more. And if there's a thunderstorm in the area it's disconnected as well...unless there's a session going on.

The good news is..if it does need to be fixed...Telos always turns them around super fast.

I can get a refurbished Zepher Xtreme (I think I still can) for $2k - I can also get a Prima LT for about $1600 -- neither from ebay. The Prima from a reliable source - the Xstream through someone a friend deals with.

Now what?

I have 3 colors I consider my colors - green, blue and PURPLE

The Musicam people are great - I bought my Prima from another VO talent 10 years ago or so and the Musicam people have always been there to help me trouble shoot if necessary. Just have to be mindful of the time difference being on the West Coast. I actually had a dream about their service a few years ago when I was having some trouble with the phone lines. I felt strange calling and asking for help since I didn't actually buy it from them, but they always helped me figure out what was going on.

I have a Zephyr XStream from ebay.

There were A LOT of scam ones out there when I bought mine several years ago. But, you could tell they were scams. They were listed for a starting bid of $1, and there were about five of them for sale. Oh, and they were listed in the category of Christmas Decorations or something like that. So be careful, ask the seller questions to ensure he's legit (even call them... I did), and make sure it comes from a non-smoking home.

That said, knock on wood, I've had no issues with my Xstream. It's quiet (I don't think the Xstreams have fans), it works, it's easy. I'm a numbskull with equipment, so I need easy.
