Same here. Haven't used them in over two years, but this thread made me pull'em back out. Gave'em a try then put'em right back up. Can't use'em at all now. Catch myself listening to much to how my voice sounds instead of concentrating on the read. |

I'm a bit more wishy washy. Depends on the read and what kind of sound I'm trying to achieve. If I need to be a "real person" I don't use em, they distract me. If it's for imaging, ANNOUNCING, or anything bassy I generally do. |

Very interesting... I'm going to give that a try... honestly, I haven't tried it before. Thanks for the idea.

Takes a little getting use too, but I find I get better reads without them. |

I haven't used headphones in years. I noticed my hearing going, probably from my days playing in various bands. The only occasions I do use phones are for ISDN or phone sessions, and then I leave one ear open.
Earlier on this thread it sounded like somebody was looking for headphones for the purpose of mixing audio. Not so sure that's a good idea...much better to find an accurate set of speakers.

Optiums Nova 71 headphones. I got them for something like 27 bucks almost 5 years ago at Radio Shack. Lightweight, seem to be accurate, and apparently quite durable. |

Control surface? If you haven't seen or used the Shuttle Pro 2, check it out. It's a USB device that has a jog wheel, ergonometrically placed buttons, etc. It works real good. Cost about $90 from Sweetwater. It's really good investment if you need to do intensive wav editing. And, of course, while it doesn't take the place of a mouse it can help you by eliminating the need to mouse around. _________________ Charlie |

Kevin,
Do you do any work via phone patch or ISDN? Aren't "cans" necessary to hear the director? I got suggestions from some here on the board to at least take one side off while recording after they listened to my demo. I
need to focus more on the character, delivery and less on the "voice".
In know I need to get away from using them.

Which reminds me of another tip I've read/heard several places. Whenever I'm someplace new, or there's somebody else controlling the audio I ALWAYS leave one ear off. It just wouldn't do to have the new intern blow out both my eardrums. |

Yes they are essential for both. |

It's a bit of a pain sometimes, but I get a better performance. I'm currently looking for a switching solution to turn the monitors off when the mic is engaged. _________________ Genus |
