My father, facing a surgery during a losing battle with colon cancer, pulled the old "Will I be able to play the violin after this operation?" line on his doctor, and the doctor fell for it.

That kind of spirit at times like that is an admirable trait, indeed.

(For those of you too young to know the joke, after the doctor says "Yes, you will," the patient says something like, "That's great, because I can't play the violin now.")

Yes sir, that was one hell of a one liner. Funny - because it is genuinely clever and witty, of course - but more than that, it shows a man of courage.

I add my good wishes and thoughts to all those already offered.

Bravo to Douglas for keeping his spirits up!

When my dad was in hospital to have a lung cancer removed, I was visiting late the same day of the op. My dad said he had asked the surgeon if he could keep the piece of lung the surgeon had removed, and dad told me it was in a paper bag on his bedside cabinet - and urged me to take a look.

I gingerly picked up the paper bag, and at his insistence peeked inside, only to see a spongy, hard, orangy/browny mass in there that made me almost faint.

When I looked up at dad, he had tears rolling down his cheeks, and told me it was the Yorkshire Pudding from his dinner that day.

He said "I might be ill, but at least I have a sense of tumour"

Power to all of us who have illness in the family at this time.

Ah yes Mary, he was a funny guy.
When I did stand up comedy for a while quite a lot of my stories were either about him or jokes I stole from him Smile

Thanks for all your positive thoughts, support and prayers.

Remaining positive at a very dark time, Douglas was rescued from months of pain and pointless medical procedures at 6 o'clock this morning.

A thousand blessing to your family.
I'll be hoisting one tonight in honor of Douglas.

When my uncle succumbed to prostate cancer the family felt both a deep loss and a profound relief that his suffering was over. I too will say a prayer for Douglas today.

Heartfelt prayers and positive thoughts to you and your family Phillip.

Dark times for me also as I lost a very good friend yesterday to lymphatic cancer. He elected to take no treatments and it wasted no time in taking him.
