|
|
I just had a test session with a recording studio on the opposite coast using IP DTL and he was very pleased with the quality. It sounds like a winner.... I hope.
I just hope I get answer before my ISDN box sells for no more than a door stop.
A couple of questions if I may for those with more experience, since their website(s) don't seem to have a lot of answers?
Does only one party need to have an account, as in the temporary VO account I have now? We just used both sides of mine (VO and Producer). He has a temporary VO type of account too, but that didn't seem to come into play.
As with ISDN I don't expect to record anything, but just in case, how does one record the incoming voice? I have a MOTU input device and their Audio Desk software, and I could hear the engineer through it just fine, but I didn't see a way record his audio. He was just taking my output from his sound card and inputting it to his DAW device.
Any good stories about using this? Liz, I see you're a proponent. Any negatives yet?
Thanks,

I've tested it and all looks fine (OK... I should say "sounds" fine). I'm seeing good reports from everywhere... there's a long discussion over on Linkedin where samples have been posted. With the obvious caveats (I mean, it is running over the public internet)... if you've got 300kbps up speed, you're good to go at the posted top rate of 128K (or so-called ISDN equivalent). If you take it as a simple point-to-point replacement, it may well serve the purpose. It's biggest asset is its ease of use... just use Google Chrome.
As for recording the incoming stream. They offer no tech support for this as the different methods are machine/OS/skill-level specific... some people have simply taken the output and looped it around on their mixer back to the input for recording. That actually hurts my sensibilities, but it works. If you're using a Mac, Soundflower is a perfect little program that hi-jacks the incoming stream and can turn it into the input for your DAW. Bottom line is that if you can record directly off the internet (Skype call etc) you can record this. It's an easy problem to solve... but if you're running Windows... you're on your own _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

No you do not need to both be signed up, or have a server. Just one side needs a server. However, to make contact lists the party without the server needs a link which is stable to make the connection.

It worked for me. Now it doesn't. It says that I have the wrong Chrome, that I need 30 or later. I have the latest Chrome (31). I tweeted to them and they immediately and corteously responded that they've seen this happen before, and that I should try disabling as and do a reset of Chrome. I did, and it didn't work. I re-installed Chrome, and that didn't work, either.
Edit: They tweeted back to me today that they made a fix to the browser detection. Everything now works perfectly, as was the case before.
First - yay twitter.
Second - mega yay to IP DTL! _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Just did a 50 minute chat with Kevy Parr in Dundee, Scotland via ip DTL at 128kbps. He recorded my voice and sent me the .wav (an uploaded snippet of it is forthcoming). There were no dropouts. The delay was negligible. We counted in tempo together and it was pretty close. Kevy's on a Mac and I'm on Windows 8.1.
Later this week we'll chat again and I'll record both my source on one computer and the ipDTL return of both of us on another as a comparison.
Edit: Ah, here's link to the :45 excerpt .wav file.

There's some heater room noise (brrrrr!) and I'm recording at my desk and not my booth, btw. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Apparently those of us who signed up before the end of the year go TWO logins, so we can give our 2nd login to our "producer" counterpart without their having to have an account.
It looks like now that ipDTL realizes that business-wise that may not be the best solution (aka: they are losing a losing a revenue stream)...those that sign up now will only get ONE login so that EACH person needs to have an account....at least that's what it looks like to me.
I have 2 logins for at least the next year so that's good
I LOVE it and am talking it up wherever I can _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

I guess I need to carve out some time to actually focus on this! I am usually such an early adopter of technology and now I feel like I am behind! _________________ Playing for a living...

Don't feel bad Connie. I'm behind on this one too.
BTW - Thanks for letting me know that my "Deli Kiosk order" was ready for pickup the other day. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

My concern about using my MacBook with ipDTL is, if it draws enough processing power, the MacBook fan will pick up speed and begin to be audible. Is that the case? _________________ Mike

Your question is valid, but your macbook should handle it if it's current enough. How's it do with SC? _________________ Don Brookshire

I never used SC with the MacBook (and haven't used it at all for a long time because no one has asked to). _________________ Mike

I don't think it draws too much. I had all kinds of things open in Metro and Desktop on Windows 8.1 intentionally for the test and it still worked fine. I had a brief dropout while I was opening Audition (like .3 seconds) but Kevy Parr on the other end didn't hear it. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Wait, I can go to the supermarket and order a pound of pastrami rather than to Lowe's and have them cut a sheet of MDF in half for me? _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
