Check out the Presonus Firebox instead of the MBox for those looking to purchase...it's outstanding.

Except that I think the only reason people buy the MBox is to get the ProTools LE software Smile.
At least that was my only reason for trying it. If you don't care about ProTools software, there are lots of options, a good one of which is the Presonus.

Pro Tools is undoubtedly the industry standard. I really like my mbox and have never had a problem with it. I would have bought it even if it didn't come loaded with Pro Tools, provided the cost reflected the omission!

Thanks again to all who offered their opinions on the Mbox. As it turned out I bought one on Ebay, plugged it into my 4 year old Gateway notebook, and it worked perfectly.

You may recall that I needed it for any work that may have come my way while I was taking care of my parents up in the Chicago suburbs. I ended up using it for a 20 minute narration, various TV sweeps promos, and the award announcements for the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame Awards. And being able to help out with the folks was great.

Again, many thanks to all.

Jim

I'd like to put in a good word for the MAudio Firewire 410. I'm running it with ProTools MPowered, No latency, none, zip, nada. Small, portable.

I've been using the MBox for a while now when outside the studio, where I use Digi 002. With either hardware I am now testing a new PT plugin called Source-Live - www.source-elements.com - that allows me to let the client listen in live on a recording via the Internet. Fantastic product...! I also use it to broadcast. 6 seconds latency between my studio and a client in Germany. I think it is a must have! I absolutely marvel at what is possible these days!!

Best,
Bernard
