I just emailed you a sample of a friend's PR40 compared to his other mics. I agree with Lance....harsh! _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Thanks Lance and Skinny....very helpful. It's now sounding like either the RE 20 or RE 27 (which has a hotter output I hear, thus potentially less noise floor).....are there any Neumann BCM 705/Dynamic fans/users out there? Or maybe the Beyer M99?
The BlueBird clip sounds good, but being a condenser not sure how useful it would be in the often unpredictable acoustic environment of the road... |

I've taken the Shure along in a travel kit for it's excellent off-axis rejection, especially when I won't know about the on-site acoustics in advance.
I feel more secure with an SM7B when room tone and background noise are a concern, that's what dynamics have going for them aside from being able to withstand the rigorous shocks and bumps of travel.
It does require some high gain, so I picked up the small and easily portable ART Project Series Tube MP with USB.
I was cautioned about noise, but even turned all the way up, this little number pushed nothing but clean gain for me.
It does have both a bass roll-off and a presence boots, giving you six possible response settings to work with. In my shootouts between the RE20 and the SM7B, I liked the sound of both, but went with the Shure for its internal shock-mount, pop-filter and shielding, since all those add-ons are external for the RE20.
A travel kit ought to be simple, right?
Lastly, keep user manuals with them so you don't have to explain pro-audio gear to airport security. _________________ Carl Welden

Carl,
Thanks for your input. I am still considering the Shure SM7 or SM 7B! |

According to Shure, the difference between the SM7 vs. SM7B is the additional A7WS close-talk application windscreen / pop-filter and "an improved bracket design for greater stability"
But if you research their spec sheets very carefully, you will note that the output level at 1,000 Hz of the SM7 is -79db and the output of the SM7B is -59db. While both require a lot of gain, the SM7B requires LESS.
To see what a bunch of pro-audio folks think, search SM7B in the wonderful T.O.M.B. (Tape OP Message Board) http://messageboard.tapeop.com/index.php they have threads titled "RE20 vs. SM7B" repeating this delicious debate for years now.
Lastly, you may get hit with a "vintage" price hike for the SM7
Good hunting. _________________ Carl Welden

That was a great little review, but I don't think the A7WS windscreen alters the measured gain.
I really liked the bit about the SM7B being able to withstand 180db wherein it's described as being at close range to the space shuttle launching.
The comment he made: "But with reasonable precautions, you could probably get away without a shock mount. Apparently Shure seems to think so as there is no shock mount available from them." may be off-base, as the entire encasement body is the shock mount and the significantly narrower capsule is floating or buffered within.
If you ever get to watch the documentary film: Some Kind Of Monster, you'll see Metalica's James Hetfield cradling this mic freely in his hands without transferring "handling noise" So it works to that extent. _________________ Carl Welden

Friends don't let friends drive that mic...
It's crazy considering that Noomin is owned by Sennheiser who makes good dynamic mics, and then they come out with that thing. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Got the 415 a couple of weeks ago. Love it!
My first vintage mic.
In fact, since they no longer make them, I picked up a second one for back-up, and for travel.
(Don't tell my wife, though!) |
