I just got off the phone with a friend who's an outstanding audio producer/engineer. He's fed up with radio (something I can completely relate to) and is interested in getting into sound design and audio post production for films (his dream gig would be sound design at Pixar or Skywalker Ranch).

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience in that area and might have any suggestions I could pass along to help him get started on this pursuit. Thanks!

Apply:

It's not sound design, but its audio and will get your foot in the door.

I just realized that there are two great books that you friend can get and read that will be good material for someone wanting to make the change to post sound for film and video.

The first is by David Yewdall, “ Practical Motion Picture Sound". David is some one I have worked with. I used this book as a teaching tool when I was teaching Location/Production Sound. This book is the second or third edition, ita through and a easy to read and understand. http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Motion-Picture-Sound-Third/dp/0240808657/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216165957&sr=8-1

The next book that would be useful is “Audio Postproduction for Digital Video” by Jay Rose, remember what’s good for video is also good for film length projects. I have only one long chat with Jay and from that conversation I can say that he is supper sharp and I have recommended his book to others. http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Postproduction-Digital-Video-Rose/dp/1578201160/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216166037&sr=8-2

Each of the books come with a CD that has practice material to help with the learning process.

Another thing that cold be usefull is a work shop. John Sisti teaches at Savanna Art College and in the summer teaches a work shop in the LA area. http://www.scad.edu/sound-design/faculty.cfm

Each of the guys are heavy hitters and great teachers. I hope this has helped.

Media Communications Association - International. http://www.mca-i.org

It is an association of media professionals - not just voice talent, but the people who hire voice talent. So if you decide to join, bring your favorite producer into the fold along with you!

I was President in 2006 - now lame duck webmaster. Member since 1987 while working full-time as a producer/writer for a major corporation.
