I don't think this is encountered in any other area of VO. Commercials are written knowing that people can't see anything, most everything else is written with a visual accompanyment.
The standard of course is to "read what is written, period". In my own way though, that leaves me a bit flat. Of course you can't describe the drawing/figure/picture, as this would be adding words to the author's work.
Has anyone ever seen this addressed in a satisfactory way?

Is it a text book or something like a non-fiction article? I've had to decribe charts and graphs in text book type recordings. It was done very simply and matter of factly.

Recently I've had a couple of scripts for podcasts that were taken from white papers and extraneous references to charts or illustrations were left in by accident. That required a client re-write.

Example.

Have a look, if you will, at these two tables:
(picture)
Suppose that you are thinking about which one would work better as a coffee table in your living room. What would you say are the dimensions of the two tables? Take a guess at the ratio of the length to the width of each. Just eyeball it.

Well if this is audio to go along with a workbook or something, it should be ok (and maybe you can have a copy provided to you during your sessions).

Otherwise, I'd probably be a smart-ass and after reading that, whisper something like "It's about 3 to 1! Shhhhh..."

Some things just don't translate into audio without some re-work. If you are in contact with publisher or author, you might want to bring one of these things up and ask them to help you find a solution to what I agree is a very unsatisfactory feeling.

You could ask the author to provide a re-write - or you could offer to re-write and charge some additional $.

Simple fix...

Which table? The one on the left or the one on the right?

What makes it a bit more challenging is the optical illusion that is done with the picture.

Later in the paragraph they have you pull out a ruler and MEASURE them to find out they are the same size.
