Does anyone know if there are AFTRA rates for spec spots?
I don't do the "no pay" spec thing, but this is paid and a big name attached. So that's the only reason I'm considering it.

Just to be clear - it's not spec work in the sense that I'm doing it for free (I'm not), but it's spec work in that the director will present it to the company as a bid for the final project.

Hey Anthony,

I found an old union rate sheet that I somehow came accross and I truly don't know where I got it from. The quality kinda sucks, however it is AFTRA and from 2003 so a bit dated, but none the less you can take a look here www.brianforrester.com/downloads/union_rate_sheet.pdf

Specifically take a look at the top of page 5.

Like I said, I can't vouch for the legitimacy or timeliness of the info, but it's worth a look.

Happy Hunting.

Brian

Well Sunny,

It looks like it's $162.20. Here's the AFTRA Radio rate page:

http://www.aftra.com/contract/crates2.htm

It's about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Thank you both. (Brian, it's on the top of Page 4 not 5).

I compared both links and the rates haven't changed.
Boom! I'm turning it down.

Gracias, Amigos.

EDIT: oops - they're both 2003 - no wonder it hasn't changed Lips Are Sealed I'm still turning it down.

Pardon me if I'm missing the point...but...you're turning down a chance to do a paid audition for a "big name" client? ... and a director who invited you to do it?

I know $162 ain't much in New York, but to pass up an opportunity to be heard....

I wasn't invited - I have the opportunity to submit myself for consideration.
Aw, what the heck, Bruce. You've twisted my arm. It is a paid audition.

btw - it's not $162 - it's about 20% of that - I just wanted to know what the Union rates for spec/demo was. Hey, now I can buy some more Chai Tea at Starbucks.

Here's the problem with spec work:
You take a chance by working for less in the hopes that later you will be booked on the final, bigger-budget project. But what I've seen happen many times is that your VO is used as a scratch track for the actual VO-actor that they've hired for the final commercial.

I've done a few final commercials with scratch tracks on them and every time I think "damn, that sucks for that guy."
