I read a short article about a voice over who makes a great claim about being a movie trailer voice. I know the voice and couldn't think of anything he'd done so I searched his website, other websites, asked around. Let me ask you this. Had you voiced just one movie trailer would you mention it? Me too. This man names lots of clients but not one movie trailer. Please do not think I'm sneering, I'm not. My point is that if you make a professional claim you had better be able to back it up.
Tonight I saw on a website "Can fool anyone with my British" accent. This I've got to hear! I listened to the entire demo - NOTHING! I'm sure you can think of a few examples. What's wrong with a little "Barnum", with over egging the pudding, with selling a couple bottles of Dr Goods? Everything, the philosphies are based on deceit and you will get found out.
Now, if Philip Banks is fairly sure you're talking bull, no harm done but what about the producer, the ad agency man, the casting director? Credibility shot! Try to restore it, very difficult.
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt".
As a voice over you will be hired for your talent and your experience, neither should be the product of an over active imagination, performance excepted. |

Philip,
Exceptional advice, as ever. It's always been a bad idea to claim what we cannot demonstrate, but in this Internet age, it's not just a bad idea; it can be career suicide. _________________ Be well,
