As I read that Dan O'Day email, I kept thinking "I understand the point the guy is trying to make but he's still coming off as a high strung a-hole in his response to thi woman!"

If he's trying "not to vent" (HA!) he's still sounding unglued as he portrays what might be a "real world reaction" to an unsolicited mp3 email (and I agree about not sending such a file w/o warning).

However, when it comes to newbies in advertising voice overs, while I would recommend a call first, sending an unsolicted CD to a agency producer to introduce yourself (w/a letter of intro and a follow up call) ain't a bad way to go. Its just better to ask permission than forgiveness on this one (although my style usually sides w/ the reverse).

Yeah, I'd agree with Peter...a bit of a rant. But if I'd just spent 30 minutes trying to download emails via a Hotel dial-up...at hotel rates...I'd be pretty pissed, too and wouldn't have any compunctions about shooting a salvo her way. His site clearly states don't email audio files. The newbie didn't read the instructions. All part of building chops on her part. She can get all snotty in her reply. But I betcha she thought twice about doing it again to anyone else.

Ask first, then send an MP3 if requested. That's how I've done it.

And congrats Pete. Mine will be 13 soon. I know you aren't getting any sleep. :lol:

[quote=Do you know who Dan O'Day is?[/quote]

I know him as a professional DJ, writer for R&R, lecturer, businessman and consultant for stations DJ's and VO's. And in the case of this particular e-mail, someone who could have handled the situation better than he did...but that's my opinion.

If there something more to it....like he's a relative or family friend or government informant...well I don't know nothin bout that.

CD through the mail - or a link to your website where your demos are parked...

Hello Connie from Bettye Zoller in Dallas. I agree with your thought above. However, as Phillip Banks said, an MP3 is fine if you've been ASKED to do so beforehand. I have been somewhat surprised during 2005 to note the increased popularity of this method among agents. Many of my students tell me their agents simply store the demo in their computers and seldom mail a hard copy CD demo anymore. And as a recording studio owner who also does CD duplication and color labels etc. we've noted a decrease in that end of the biz as more and more clients are telling us they burn their own but they don't have that much "need" for hard CD copies anymore as they do so much with MP3 shortie edits attached to emails or simply guiding people to their site or their agents' sites. Yes. It's an online world. Makes you wonder how the postal services all over the world are feeling about that. Guess that's why postage keeps going up? Let me say, while here, that CONNIE'S SITE is another MUST SEE for all. She's a wonderful pro and coach and her site has wonderful free articles on it. I guide all my students to it. Shame on you for your opinion of Dan O'Dare, Peter. Apart from his work in the world of broadcasting and fighting the Mike-On you obviously don't have the first idea of how important he thinks he is!!!

Down, Boy.

As Andy said:
Anyone who reads pays any attention to anything Dan O'Day writes would know to NOT send an MP3.

My view...for what it's worth, anyway...is that whether O'Day is a high-strung asshole or not is largely irrelevent...he's not the only one if he is, and anyone who who has a personal policy of never working for one will probably be living pretty hungry. Nervy, irascible SOB's and very busy people are very often the people that one must deal with to get a job, whether it's a position or just a gig.

Then again, had our Mary been the one sending him the "offending" file, that whole email bickerfest wouldnt have happened because Mary has far more class, tact, and social grace, and would have won him over with her first reply. Of that, I have no doubt whatsoever.

The last time I was at the post office, it was still full, I still had to watch the same old man pull his same lame trick and act like he lost his counter ticket to garner immediate attention. The post office (in the US) is far from hurting because a few demos aren't being mailed.....

But based on the quality of most of the demo's CDs that are mailed, producers, directors and agents are all sadly over stocked with suitable items upon which to place their plant pots, coffee cups and ash trays.

Present company etc ......

I have taken exception to this posting in order to save others the time.
