A client emailed me this morning to ask me to audition for a local spot and asked if I had done any work in this market sector in her state before. I don't think I have, but am not 100% sure and realise I ought to be keeping track. An Excel spreadsheet will do the trick, although a database would be much nicer. Do any of you have super freaky neat-o ways of keeping track of such things?

Rejoicing in advance...

Excel is probably the easiest way to go...especially if you already know how to use it (why bother learning Access or some other complicated program if you don't need it?). I've used Excel over the years to log projects, and it works just fine. Just set up your column headings across the top (date, locations, project name, etc. and any other pertinent information). And, if you didn't already know, you can sort an Excel spreadsheet by highlighting the entire sheet and following the prompts. If you specify your first row as your column headings, then it sorts everthing below that. Voice on!

In Episode 44 of the Everything Acting Podcast (which by the way, I recommend wholeheartedly) I heard about a product called Actor Track. I don't know if it is what you are looking for, but it sounded pretty good.

I find Actor Track annoying and difficult to use. If anyone has figured out how to make it useful for VO folk, please clue me in!

I use ACT! to track all of my clients. They have some great search features that would help. I enter every studio I have ever auditioned or book in and I keep some simple notes as to directions, subway access, etc.

I use an Excel page I call Conflicts using these headings:

Date
Agent
Client
Category
Medium
Market
Kill Date

I don't track payment here, although I certainly could.

Sometimes, it's just as easy to note the details on a slip of paper and keep it handy on your desk somewhere for future reference........

I'm heading out this afternoon to pick up Apple's new spreadsheet software (part of their iWork suite). I could never get my head around Excel or Exhale or whatever it's called. The Apple version looks easy enough for this idiot to handle.

I use an application called Soho Notes for storing most everything VO related. I can keep my pay records, studio maps, invoices, restrictions and even my demos in there. Finally I am getting close to being the organised individual I have always dreamed of.

Maiku.
