Does anyone here get Radio and Production Magazine? For those of you who do not, Dave Foxx (Creative Directory and Voice of Z100, NY) had a really great article about setting up ProTools templates for your sessions - mainly for individuals who do not already practice using templates. He illustrated and described his base template which was all inclusive. I think seeing it will make some people ask "why" and explain "the mysteries of the universe" for others.

While I've used templates for some time they've been minimalist. I never included external devices such as ISDN, the telephone patch, CD and cassette players, ReplayTV and other items in to the template. What surprised me most about the template is Daves built it around routing audio with minimal (and effective) plugin use. While the article was not about imaging, for those of you who are curious about the current "Z100" imaging read for some reason, it's all in the template.

If I can get another 10 minutes free, I'll through some screenshots up.

Here's that image I mentioned long ago....

As you can see, all the VO input tracks (bright Red) end up in some way, shape or form in the Cmpr submix (middle Green), which ends up in the mix output, Mstr1. I've also added additional inputs and outputs for the Telos Zephyr (ZphyI/ZphyO) and TelosOne (HybrI/HybrO). The outputs are controlled using a Send Bus B (Send Bus A "Rvrb" is visible in this picture, that audio is being sent to the Reverb track adjacent to the Cmpr track). The computer's audio comes in through the track Input which is an AUX track which makes it easy to audition music beds, etc. In ProTools, AUX tracks contain no audio files, audio routed through them will be heard or processed realtime. In most cases, the Master Fader (Mstr1) is set at -6dB - the makeup is done via processing if required.

It may seem like a lot, as it did to me the first few times I used it, but as I looked through my previous projects, in some way shape or form, they all ended up looking the same way. Think of it like a one glove fits all approach. You should be able to recreate this in any audio editor which supports multiple tracks (and obviously routing).

Ah ha! I see where you're coming from on that Kevin. Nice pic. Thanks a bunch. That's a great session template and exploits the strength and power of Pro Tools.

I read that to create the template, you save the template setup and name it, close it and, then, secure the folder as Read-only.

To use the template, open the "session template" and to name the session, do File > Save Session As. Name the session.

Is that, basically, the procedure? That can really save a lot of time.

Yep, that's exactly what he was saying and those are the correct instruction on PC, with the Mac it's a little different, but the same process, then you open the Session Template and it prompts you for the new name.

The only drawback is that it does save the bit depth as part of the template format info which can not be changed (so far as I've seen). I created two, 44.1 @ 24. and 48 @ 24.

The Pro Tools manual says you can change the attributes (sample rate and/or bit depth) and file type if you do a File > Save Session Copy As. It's used for archival purposes and transferring to other Pro Tools systems. However, only the audio of the session is saved. If you import audio, for example a SFX, and then delete the SFX and then do File > Save Session Copy, you won't have the SFX available for "revert".

That's a little different from how it works with Save > Session, where you can get back to the previous state prior to deletion after the "save".
