OK, I've been searching the archives...I've typed in a ton of word combinations...and I'm not finding what I'm looking for. It must be spread all over the board. So, please- if you know of a specific thread, and can push me in the right direction- I would be much obliged!

Here's the deal...I just bought a Lawson L47 FET after using one in a local studio and falling in love...it should be here in a couple of weeks- yay! I also just bought a wireless phone jack after discovering our entire house has been wired wrong and it is impossible to install a phone line in my studio without tearing into the walls (we plan to sell in a year- not worth it). So, I finally have a private studio line and can put in a phone patch (at the request of a very regular client).

The deal is- I need a mixer...and I want one that will not hum- I want one that is as silent as I can find, isn't very large, and won't cost as much as my new mic. Currently, I am going from mic into a Focusrite Trackmaster Pro which I will probably put on e-bay soon as I'm pretty sure its the cause of the slight hum I have. That goes into the MBox into my computer. I wanna mixer, but I want no hum- tech gurus...HELP! (pretty please?)

Thanks Todd! One site has one listed cheaper than the others...but it has the words "Pro 12 Input 8 Channel Mixer (B Stock)" behind it...any idea what that means?

Kara..I own two Yamaha MG12/4 mixers. Three years old. Still work
perfectly and are NOISE FREE. I recommend them.
Very versatile, and unlike the Mackies, the cable connections are in the back of the mixer and looks neater.

The Makies are good also, but they cost more with no added benefit.
Unless you step up to the Mackie "Onyx" line, get a Yammy.

IMHO, member FDIC.

"B Stock" usually means it's a "second"..cosmetic defect or worse.

I usse both Yamaha and Mackie mixers. Yamaha for mixing live music on-air at my radio gig...Mackie for my voice-over studio in CT. Both are good choices. For VO I'd lean to the Mackie side for the flexibility in patching.

1202vlz's are very common on eBay...you might score yourself a sweet deal.

i recently sold my mackie 1402 vlz pro. i loved it when i had it. but, yeah it was a bit pricey when i got it 7 years ago.

i bought an alesis multimix 8usb board to replace it. i love it! it's small, it's silent, it plugs right into a free usb port. (no drivers needed with xp or vista. uses the audio codecs already there). it's basically a mixing board and sound card in one unit. and like the mackie boards the wires are on top, so when it's hooked up it's not too pretty to look at.

and i think "b stock" means it's either left over inventory, returned inventory, or refurbished inventory. the vlz/vlz pro boards have been discontinued and replaced with vlz3. (at least that's what the guy at the music store told me when i went to sell him my board)

i got mine on ebay a few years ago (CHEAP) ... the xdr pre amps are super quiet and i like it a lot.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=mackie+1202&category0=

no personal experience with yahama boards - other than a low-end dj board i had once ... no problems with it. i like the inputs on top - easy - imho.

I love my Mackie.
1202 VLZ Pro.

No hum, very little hiss at high volume.

OK, question #2...when i set up my computer for recording- I hired a computer genius (who was a whopping 19 yrs old) to set up my computer to the specifications of Pro Tools. Learned my lesson- the computer tech that now helps me is 40. Kids are great, just very ambitious. I'm still working through what exactly happened to my pc. I think I have a sound card, but not sure- the original hard drive is now gone along with most of the software for burning cd's etc. Just need to get that stuff installed. Will I need a new sound card? How can I tell?

Disclaimer...I'm great with big tech gear- hooking stuff up, etc...but I'm completely backwards when it comes to computers...

Those of you with phone patches, how do you have the phone patch configured with the mixer in order to keep the phone out of the mix yet still monitor the caller?

Kara--If you care about size (or at all, really), I have the Mackie 1402-VLZPro.

Kara,

Is this a new computer you bought? or the one you've been using before?

if it's a new pc, you either have a card built in, or there's a separate PCI card installed. you can check the back of the computer and see if you see the mini plugs. these days the plugs are color coded green/red/yellow/purple, etc...

also, if this is a new computer, and your old computer had a seperate PCI sound card, see if that old card will work on the new system (was it a pro audio card? that is, something you'd by at a music store as opposed to compusa).
