Being one of the older v.o.'s on this list...I have a real love for Electro Voice RE-20 mics...as, I am sure, do a lot of others. I'm curious what, if any, preamp you others might be using with that mic. Deidre, I know of our fondness for the RE-20. What're your thoughts?

I'd never think of speaking for Deirdre, but I use the Symetrix 528 on my RE-20. I think DB does too.

If you must speak of/for/about me, be sure to include 2 "R"s.
I love the sound I get with the Symetrix 528.
Mega props to Ted Stewart who told me about it.
I use no EQ and a tiny noise gate and that's it. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

any preamp with 65dB of gain is almost a requirement for me.
That said, I really like how the 610 works with it. Oddly, I find some of the lower end Drawmer pres do an awesome job with the RE-20 (normally I stay away from their "bargain" preamps, as they're too noisy for my liking). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Yikes, Deirdre! Truly sorry about that! I don't know whether to blame my spell check, bad brain (brane) or poor typing skills. Please forgive.

I've used the RE-20 for 25 years (radio). They sound good with any pre.
If your using a mixer, Mackie or Yamaha, they work fine.
Also sound good with a DBX 286A. You don't need to spend much to get a good sound out of an RE-20. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

This is true, but if you use something like one of the el cheapo ART tube preamps, you'll definitely notice a difference between that and, oh say, a DBX286 series.
FWIW: the biggest casting agency in Philadelphia uses an RE-20 with a DBX 286A for their casting, and even their actual bookings (though they're also referring people to a local studio now as well... depending on the budget of the client). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I used the ole trusty Studio Projects C-1 for the Iraq liners. But my RE-20 loves those screaming car commercials and just goes along for the ride. I have one radio station that prefers its liners using the RE-20. |
