Yeah, but when they're only paying a hundred bucks...they're jacking us around. At the very least...they should kiss me before they leave.

Since you're asking... I would never do 7 minutes of audio (with music) for $100. But that's just me.

I've had similar experiences... private lead one night around 8:30 pm ET (I picked it up immediately)... they needed the read by 5 pm ET the next day. I was happy with the rate, so I immediately call and email the guy that night, but didn't talk to him, just left messages and follow up via phone the next morning (he had included his number). Long story short... never heard from him. Not even a "thanks for calling, but I found someone else."

Yeah, the guy asking for the demo after he sent you the lead... a little odd. But, the bright side, at least he did get back in touch with you!!!

The only thing odd about this is why you would accept $100 for a 7-minute job, with music no less!

I've seen this lots of times. Private lead comes in asking if I'm available, and whether the rate is ok. Unless I am specifically and explicitly offered the job, I assume this same question is being asked of several short-listed VO talents.

After letting the potential client know that I am available to do the job at the stated price, and within the requested time frame, I am sometimes asked to audition a portion of the script to help them make their final decision. Other times I am just informed that my standard demo will be considered by the client's client and they'll get back to me if they need me.

To me, "private lead" does not automatically mean I've gotten the job.

OK...not to be a downer here, but let's give Bob a break....if he's OK with doing a 7 minute job for $100, then leave it at that...I mean, I understand that many on this board are a lot farther along, but if he had gotten the gig, that's $100 more than he would have had otherwise.....I know, I know...more is better, but the (potential) client said he may very well have other jobs...so ....what's better 3 short $100 jobs or 1 longer $300 job?.....

Like Diane says (thanks to Rodney) "He cold be cuttin' his ass in a factory!"

Sorry....didn't mean to get on my soapbox.....

I agree with you Liz. But I also hate to see the guy get taken advantage of, that's my only point on that subject. But you're right, it's better than cutting your ass in a factory for sure.

I knew I was going to get grief for accepting that job! Kiss

I know it was low. What motivated me was the fact it was a private lead. I get so few of those, it was a bit of an ego boost to get one, so my ego said "hey, this guy likes you just from your generic demos! Let's do it!"

So I did say yes to the job, but I did draw the line on the custom demo. So I still have a little pride left. Wink

I doubt that I'm really any further along in my career. I think if you get a low ball job offer, you're going to get jerked around more. AND, I was just sayin' I wouldn't have done it for that. I'm new, but I have a "value" for my time.

Bob, don't worry... I'm sure there are many more private leads to come your way!!!!

A couple of the private leads I've gotten were from clients who were in the shortlist stage. They listened to all the submitted demos that they wanted and then contacted a select few they wanted to read something else. I didn't confirm but I suspect in the two I've seen so far that fit this criteria were for clients who didn't ask for a custom demo, but I could see a client wanting perhaps to hear another take with the people from the shortlist.

This really is the way to do it - sort of harkens back to the sensible days of doing the initial casting off the standard demos and then holding a casting session from those select few that have the right "sound."

The key missing item here is letting the talent know that they are ON a short list rather than a true single contact. Methinks the talent seeker may not understand that the talent doesn't realize that the message has been sent to some others. However, that being said, I have received private leads before that did have a disclaimer on the bottom that said something about other talents receiving the same note.

Connie,

I've seen that on some private leads, as well.

Bob - at the risk of being VOICE-ist...you are just the nicest guy! Did you get your project finished that you were editing during the conference?

(ps - I finally figured out that nice guys finish first! Took me nearly 50 years to figure that out...)

I received a private lead yesterday - for pretty much no money for a group that really didn't need me - followed by another email to my personal email with the same offer. I have not responded to either...primarily because it just felt like the person was shot-gunning his request to the world. He didn't pick me out because of my talent, he picked me out because I popped up on the search.

Connie and Liz,

Thank you for your very kind comments. I think it's fair to say that Deirdre has attracted a crowd of nice people, all around. I'm grateful to be part of this family. Truly. (OK. It's more of a menagerie, but then so's my family!) Laugh

And yes, I did indeed finish and on time. The check's already in the bank.
