So I went to my kids' school a did a career day, wandering from class to class to talk about VO and then engage them in a little. Took a USB mic and jacked it into my laptop, recorded them saying their names and such, dropped it over some music and fx. They loved it--though most of them associate VO with cartoon voices. Anyway, I just got an envelope full of "Thank you" cards from the kids, a few of whom indicated they wanted to pursue VO in the future. I was genuinely touched. And maybe I just inspired the next Mel Blanc or Don LaFontaine. Always nice to give something back.

Matt,
Way to go! I did a "Media Day" at a local university a few weeks ago. Great fun. Most of the students wanted to know more about having an "internet based business" and some were interested in video production and how my business fit into that. I haven't gotten any letters yet.
Congratulations on being a big hit! |

That's cool! I love speaking to kids about being a voice actor. Unfortunately, DragonBall Z isn't what it used to be- so I have to work a little harder to be considered 'cool' I just do a bunch of silly voices and that usually works. Plus, I talk about 'character development'. I make them call out descriptions and then create a voice for the character, then I turn the tables. Fun stuff! Hopefully this new show I'm working on will become popular and I can go back to 'just showing up'. OK- just kidding. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I had a group of kids one year respond with consummate boredom to my multimedia presentation.
A couple of months later, a kid from that group saw me at the grocery store and told me how muc he loved my talk and how it gave him so much to think about blah blah blah.

Besides the mic and the computer... you really could have impressed them with one of those large sacks of money that you find on your doorstep everyday.

I've seen one of your presentations...I highly doubt ANYONE was bored with you! You inspired me too (no, I am not sucking up- I really mean it). _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Deirdre,
I hear you. Several years ago when my daughter was in high school and taking a "Broadcast Media" class or some such, the teacher asked me to come to the class to talk about working in radio. Two members of the class put their heads down on their desks as I began to speak and slept through the entire class.
Oh yeah, I was a big hit...not! (Though to be fair, there were a few kids in the class who not only paid attention, but actually asked some pretty bright questions at the end.) _________________ Be well,

I had the chance to speak during Career Day at my youngest brother's middle school in San Antonio and actually managed to keep the kids engaged. I got a nice note from the class that included many thank-you's for explaining the difference between AM and FM. I illustrated the signal patterns on the chalkboard, explained skip waves and all that. I was amazed that was what they took from the talk. Maybe a couple of them became engineers. _________________ Greg Littlefield

I once did a Careers Day presentation at my old High School.
Even ten years after graduation, the principal was ready to kick me out yet again - and that was at the moment I walked through the front door. The way his jaw dropped when he saw me, I thought he'd bruise his jaw if he tried to walk, or he might even trip over his own chin. In fact, I was kinda hopin'....... |
