On that note, where the heck is FedEx. My package was on a truck yesterday but didn't get delivered because "package not due for delivery". Damn super saver shipping. It's on a truck again today according to the tracking. Fine, it better be here. Arghh!
EDIT: Well what do you know. 6 minutes later and it just showed up. I guess bitching about it really does make a difference! _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

I'm with spouse also... hmmm...
Similar thing happened to me. I ordered 3-day shipping on Monday, but the tracking said it was on the truck for delivery yesterday. Then it said it wasn't delivered due to "customer not available or business closed." That was total bull, since I was here (I had it delivered to my job) all day. Oh well, it ended up coming earlier today. _________________ Donovan

I actually canceled the order for the motherboard I got. It was backordered and they said they had none on order. Huh? So I got a different one that should be just as good or maybe better.
The EMU arrived today. It's so lonely. |
What motherboard did you order and why? I've been thinking "roll-your-own" recently too. Did you see this article?

I hadn't seen that article...thanks for the link.
I ended up getting the Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard. I actually wanted the P5B-E but couldn't find it at the places I wanted to buy from. The Deluxe is fine...has a few extra bits on it that may come in handy some day.
Why I chose it...
- Good cooling design and well-reviewed for the most part (there will always be SOMEbody who doesn't like it)
- Plenty of SATA 3.0Gb connectors (6 internal / 1 external) for hooking up fast SATA 3.0Gb drives. I plan on having a single drive as the boot disk and three drives configured as RAID-5 for the recording disk.
- 1066Mhz front-side bus means good memory access speeds
- Very well reviewed BIOS upgrade ability including Flash from USB memory drive, which is great
- Some other miscellaneous / less important things, like Asus' Q-connector for front panel connectors

Yes! It's all in my hot little hands. Muhahahahahaa.
Well, my hands are actually not that little. And the stuff is at my office.
BUT...
Tomorrow at 10:30am we have an appointment with the florist to re-do some of our flowers and add some things we forgot (oops) and THEN I'm headed into the office to start building The Beast.
Again, I say, Muhahahahahahaha _________________ Lou Zucaro

I never incorporated flowers into my equipment build. Let us know how they work! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Haha. No...no need to explain things...if *I* know what I'm talking about, surely everybody else must, too, right?!
Wedding flowers...they're wedding flowers. I'm likely not going to incorporate them into the build. At least not until I need something to mask the burning smell of my faulty connections _________________ Lou Zucaro

I did that on my machine, and it WORKS SO WELL. I have to caution everyone though, make sure you choose the right drives when building your raid device. I thought I did and wound up having a 3 drive raid-0 device. It was smokin fast, however I included the boot disk in the raid. My system crashed SO hard it was pitiful. You see, Microsoft XP will not boot from a Raid 0, or Raid 5, or Raid 1+0 config. It will do it from raid 1 (mirrored drive).
It took me 2 days to reconstruct everything, was not happy
But the cool thing now thatI've got it all working properly, is that not only does the raid 5 give you nearly fault resistant safety of your data, it improves the speed of writing and reading to your disks. The fastest of all is Raid 0, but if one disk fails you lose everything, where with Raid 5, the pack can limp along with one dead drive until you replace the bad one and then it rebuilds your data.
Don't forget to get some external backup HD space.. I've got almost 2 terrabytes... bought more than I need now. But ALWAYS do some backups!
Geek man out. |

My Geeky Goodness. And I thought I was bad about hardware. I have 1.75 TB in my Mac Pro and a 500GB external drive as well. I am feeling inadequate, I think I'm going to buy a Corvette. |

Well...so far so good...put in the power supply, attached the motherboard, intalled the processor and RAM, put the drives in, added the video card, the E-MU 1616m, attached all of the various cables, attached the monitor and...woohoo...it booted!!
(I've only connected the boot drive & DVD drive so far as my understanding is that XP before SP2 won't deal with RAID anyway).
Did a quick BIOS update, installed XP Home and am now waiting for SP2 to download. Once I get XP caught up on updates, I'll update the video card drivers then have a go at installing the drivers for the 1616m.
Computers is fuuuuun*

Well, at least at a basic level, it works.
Granted, all I had to record with was a crappy old $30 microphone, so there's some noise related to me holding / moving it while recording, but I just wanted to make sure it would, in fact, record.
First test
