I have heard from more than 1 professional that people who sing have an advantage due to the musicality of voiceover in general and the breathing / breathe control involved, so perhaps singing / voice lessons would be helpful?

As far as avoiding things Banksey has written, I definitely feel smarter after having read them, regardless of my lack of understanding.

I am viceless. Even when I drove to Cullen earlier today I was able to resist one of their famous ice creams.

Philip, what is that sticking out the side of that? In American it looks like what they call a "Slim Jim". Smile

I'll second the vocal training. It expands your range, strengthens your existing range, and helps you to learn how to breathe a bit better.

I'm also with the advice about learning a wind instrument, or any other musical instrument really. Much like music, copy has a pattern, a rhythm to it. Being able to recognize and meet the rhythm is a critical aspect of what we do.

Cardio exercise is highly recommended. It increases your overall physical fitness and really helps you with your breathing (as we grow up, we stop letting ourselves breathe normally through our diaphragm... cardio forces our bodies to go back to it's natural instincts).

Read aloud every day for 30 minutes... that's my current goal (sadly, I'm an insanely busy guy, so I guess that's 30 minutes less of sleep I'll be getting, lol).

Stay away from sugary drinks and caffiene (which I'm saying as I drink a Coke... although it's my only soda in the past three weeks, and only because there is literally nothing else and I'm not a huge fan of tap water). That's a toughie, since I am addicted to Turkey Hill Green Tea with Ginsing and Honey.

Trick there... toss a wedge of lemon or lime (or both) in a glass of water. The flavor and small amounts of sugar deal with the body's cravings as you ween yourself off.

Hey Hart, use more lip balm. You'll find yourself having less lip smacks. The teeth issue is something all together different though, lol.

Banksey, that is too funny!!! Does that EVER look good!! What is that in the ice cream? a Kit Kat? Yummy!

Last night, I had such a sugar craving that I was BEGGING my husband to go to Dairy Queen with me. Begging. But I lost. He's on a diet (as he has been for 4 years) and yesterday he decided he wasn't eating ice cream. Phooey, I say!!

JRod: Good thoughts about singing... I've heard that too. I really want to widen my range. I have a pretty high voice (was a soprano in my high school and collegiate choirs). I really want learn to drop it down, and try to sound older when necessary.

Hart: I had a cavity filled in August... and had to get my first root canal and crown in Dec. The crown prep was far worse than the root canal. I too find that I like to brush my teeth before a session. Makes the mouth fresh! Smile Glad we're in the same boat.

The whole concept is called a 99 although mine is more of a 198. Consists of a cone, soft whipped ice cream with a Cadbury Flake ...... Simply flakey chocolate

Just remember (from LoveNotes) it takes 220 repititions to make or break a habit.

If you are able to get past the desire and fixation on the habit 220 times, you will no longer have the need. Conversely, make your career a habit, make your personal LoveNotes a habit and repeat it often for complete success.

Toodles

Back to the plot. The Carpenters, not joking. Learn to exhale a lot as you sing and try to emulate Karen Carpenter's pitch.

Put your hand on your sternum (breast bone) growl and hum until you feel the vibration in your chest. Keep the volume low to begin with as quietness doesn't tighten the vocal chords so much, hence lower pitch as well as lower volume.

You know, Banksey, I hate to say it, but I'm not a big Carpenters fan. I find the music a little bit of a downer (and her eating habits, or lack thereof... ha ha Diane!). Maybe I can get the same effect from singing along with... Sarah McLaughlin? ???

I like the humming exercise... thanks for the tip... I'll use that one.

And, I LIKE that Cadbury... not a big fan o' chocolate, but that looks deeee-lish!

Frank - that would be 220 days without a Coke. I just don't think I can do that!! I do, I swear, LOVE this career and TRULY want to be a success at it, but might I indulge once in a while? Like once a week or so?

I ran a 1/2 marathon in January (... ok, I ran/jogged the first 9.5 miles, and had to walk/run the remaining... I'm not terribly athletic)... and I haven't really run too much since b/c I've been spending my free time sending demos to agents, recording auditions, etc. You're right though... the more aerobic exercise, the better off the breath support, I suppose. Gotta get back on the running horse!!!

These are ALL great tips everyone!!!! I never thought of the lip balm. Excellent!

Karen Carpenter is the obvious choice which why I mentioned The Carpenters but it's the pitch and tone that's important, Janis Siegel is another good one.

I thought this was in interesting topic since I also have an addiction.....Mt. Dew. I drink about 2 of 'em a day. Trying to cut back but I usually have one in the morning to wake me up since I don't drink coffee or hot tea. Then another one in the afternoon to keep me awake. Bad cycle I know. It's horrible on my voice. I try to get my projects done mid day so my voice isn't dried out. The only way to counteract what Mt. Dew does to your vocal cords is to drink just as much water while you're drinking the Dew. As my Voice Doctor said to me once....."Glenn....we all make choices...."

Speaking of the voice doc there are excercises designed to strengthen laryngeal (vocal) muscles. I found this out when I had to go to the ENT doc because my voice kept cracking while I was on the air. And it wasn't just drinking pop although that did not help. The doctor's office also has a branch called The Blaine Block Institute of Voice Analysis here in Dayton. Most of their patients are singers but they do get the occasional announcer, newscaster or VO person. Anyway they put a camera down my throat and took a look. They also did some evaluation on the strength of my voice, lung capacity etc. I ended up having some weaked and overused laryngeal muscles partly due to being a screamin radio jock for 20 years and doing the ridiculous car ads. So they put me on a therapy program of vocal inflection excercises that really helped. It's basically holding notes from C-G while saying the word "ole" and vibrating the sound from your lips instead of your throat. The technique took me several weeks to learn with the help of the voice doc. Doing the excercise twice a day for about 2-3 weeks helped me get the strength back to doing some of the stuff that I could never do before. I was able to go alot lower in pitch. It doesn't change your voice, but it allows your vocie to be strengthened so you don't have to force it. You can relax and sound natural and strong. But you have to keep doing them to keep your voice muscles strong. It's just like working out. If you slack...after awhile your turn to blubber......just thought I'd share:-)
