I haven't had a lot of experience with the U87, but I have had some. To me a correct description of the U87 would not include "exciting." It would include "accurate" which is what versatile music mics should be. They should record strings accurately, horns accurately, voice accurately.
A lot of the voiceover you hear on the air was not recorded with "accuracy" in mind. It was recorded with the idea of cutting through the mix. Admittedly much of this is the result of intelligent (and expensive) outboard gear. I'm not a mic guru, but I opt for the mic that gets the voiceover job done for you, be that a TLM103, a Rode NTK, an EV RE20, or if your pipes require it, a U87.
(By the way, I'm one of those who for years lusted after a Sennheiser 416. Legend has it, it's the mic of choice of the movie trailer industry, Beau Weaver uses it, etc., etc. Happy to hear it may not be for everyone, but it's interesting to see the used prices on EBay have gone down...)

I talked with several vo guys who are using the mic and I stumbed upon
Jeff Laurence in North Carolina. He does a lot of radio vo and some
infomercials. He did the one for the "george foreman grill".. He sent me
an wave file comparison of the Sennheiser vs a U-47... The Sennheiser
sounds crisper than the Neumann but the u-47 is warmer....
The 416 is a little harsher in sound, but better with punch. Just might be
the thing for tv- vo. PM me with your email address or tell me how to do
it here...and we can share it with everyone. It's a quick sample of a
few lines... Everyone can make up their OWN mind.... |

I support the previous posts on the U87 wholeheartedly! I did my demos on it. Wonderful colouration. But at home in my little studio I am now using a TLM 103 and I am delighted. It works great for my voice.
