VO-BB - 19 YEARS OLD!

We all know how we announce better standing up, making full use of diaphragmatic breathing, but also how we also spend most of our time sitting at the computer on our desk editing, e-mailing, and cruising VO-BB.com for tips, gripes and sage advice.

So, do you sit while you announce and sacrafice some richness to your dulcet tones, or do you have a separate stand-up mic and go back and forth, and back and forth to your desk?

Well I've found a way to have the best of both worlds. I found it at IKEA, that Scandanavian warehouse store that has amazing deals on home (and office) furnishings. It's an electric desk, actually a stylish table, that raises and lowers at the touch of a button. It goes from about 27" inches high, a good typing level, to chest high in a matter of seconds. My computer sits on it and I affixed my table top microphone boom to it (I hated screwing holes into the beautiful finish, but it's my job), so now I can stand and have the computer, copy and mic right in front of me, and when I get tired of standing, I can lower the whole thing in a jif. The desk was about $600 with tax, but worth it for the flexibility it gives, and for the ooohs and aaahs I get from showing it off to visiting voice talent and agency peeps.

Look under Workspace furniture. It's the Galant series of tables, and it's their "sit/stand" models, that come in rectangles and L-shaped corner units, and a variety of wood finishes.

It's muy cool, as we say in the southwest.

I have a desk with a stand-up mic to the side, and just swing it around when I need it, swing it back when I'm done. Too easy?

That is too cool! Unfortunately, it seems that IKEA doesn't realize (or doesn't care) that the Canadian dollar has gained a bit on the US$ and it costs over $900 here in Toronto.

Oddly, the website makes no mention of the "electric" mobility feature of these tables. Hmm.

And I love Ikea.

I only wish that they had a more hospitable shipping policy system and more locations. If you're not near a store and/or able to schlepp something home that very day (which often requires a van or SUV for furniture) it's pretty tough to buy from them.

I like that! Cool idea for a workstation set up. I stand some and sit some while recording...just depends on my mood. Coming from a radio background, I stand up while on the air. My current full time day job (911 dispatcher) is a sit down affair. I do wish we had the nice, adjustable furniture in the dispatch so we could have the sit/stand choice.

I saw something similar last month(and last year) athte DV expo in NYC, with the monitor bridge that was also electrically adjustable, cannot remember if I even asked the price because I knew I couldn't afford it, but very very cool.
