Lot of v-o friends who do TV are recommending a sennheiser MKH mic
for use! I looked on a site where I saw the mic and wow....it sure is
TINY but the sound is really where it counts! Anybody on this forum
own one? Know a place where I could try it out for a few days and return
it? My friend Brian Lee uses it and he's doing CNN with it daily. Also
Vic Caroli...(voice of National Geographic and Monday Night Football) has
one in his arsenal. Must be popular....!!! New it runs around $1000...
Please share your thoughts....

At least two of us use Sennheiser MKH416P48. You can rent these mics from various companies that supply film/video supplies. If you go shopping on Ebay, beware of those selling 415Ts claiming they sound the same, they don't.

The 416 is a location sound recordists mic and has been given rights of passage into some VO's booths. Within reason a great voice will sound great on any good mic. If you like your sound like your potaoto chips, thin and crispy then the 416 is for you.

I was going through some old material recently, some recorded which was unprocessed and I heard it against a documentary (all mixed and sweetened) that I narrated in a studio using the 416 and the latter really did lack something.

Head to head against a Neumann U87 the 416 wasn't really up to much. In fairness it was like comparing a Land Rover with a Ferrari, both great cars but I wouldn't want to take a Ferrari off-road.

Anyone doing voice overs in a field during a hurricane, get a 416..........and a so'wester.

It's very popular, but it isn't everyone's best choice. I bought one, tried it for some stuff, watched it gather dust, then sold it.

I use a TLM 103 and to my taste, it just sounds a lot better with my voice than the 416. But I must say, it is nice physically, because you really don't need a separate pop filter and you can work it really close very easily.

An excellent shotgun mic. I've purchased them for field gear at TV stations where I've worked. Interesting that they're showing up in VO booths. I've had to use them from time-to-time to track news copy in the field. I'd have to agree with Phil, they have a rather crisp response.

Here's one strong opinion worth reading--Corey Burton is a top LA voice talent

I actually lost interest after a few sentences and the will to live after a paragraph ..... Does he like it or not?

Great LA voice talent? For the record it's Littlehampton not Little Ampton! So if anything LH, surely.

No, he doesn't. Says it sounds tinty and crisp. Cuts off the bass. Still it's a great mic when you're at a police stand-off. At a hundred yards it does a wonderful job of picking up, "Drop the chalupa or we're comin' in punk!"

Have forwarded the critique to a friend of mine who suffers from insonmia.

Location sound recordist with MKH416 to actress "If you're going to look at the mic when you speak, please don't blink as it sounds like a flock of geese over head".

This is a matter of personal taste, sure people hate the mic, but many o of those people are doing a lot of character work. When you have to move around that much, you're moving beyond the tight pattern of the mic and it starts to sound small and puny. If you're voicing trailers and or promos, then your lips are right up on the mic and the sound can hardly be described as tiny. I've said it a 1000 times, I'll say it again, most studios have two mics (416 and u87) for a reason....

If the U87 isn't to the taste of the person paying then the 416 will deliver. For the likes of me it is merely a case of read the text provided until I'm told that it's ok to go home.

I know one male voice who bought a 416 because he heard that all the movie trailers were recorded using them, untrue by the way. He got the sound but overlooked the fact that he would be hired for him and not his mic.

That's sad, but doesn't surprise me one bit.

Best thing to do is try one out and see for your self. I asked a friend of mine for his comments..

Why don't you try one out for yourself and see...?
Everyone I know uses it or at least has one.

Promise you'll love it.

This guy is the announcer on a major network. Still..if full range and bass
is your thing... This mic maybe...is not. But Banksey kinda alluded to
something. Either you got it or not.... Mic or not!
