So, I finally got fed up enough with Windows and UAD constantly fighting like step children and bought a Mac.

I did this once before back in 2015 and for whatever reason (me???) it ran like crap. Brand new MBP and for some reason a few Chrome tabs and Adobe audition would turn it into a laggy annoyance machine. I had seen enough of the beach ball. I returned it and bought a Dell XPS, that has be great, minus the whole UAD only kinda works with some apps problem.

So last week I bought a MB Air with an i7 and 16gb of ram. Same deal, the thing is bogged down and crashed twice in the last two days. Once running a Zencastr session + Audition and a few Chrome tabs and once with just Audition and Chrome. Engineer said maybe I ran out of ram, but with 16gb??

I really dig the OS. It just feels better than Windows and the Apollo works with everything so far.

I want this to work but can't figure out what I'm doing to make it so mad.

Is it the Air platform? Chrome? Adobe?? Some Chrome plugin?? 16gb and an i7 not enough horsepower?

Is it just me??

I'm returning this one for an M1 version and hoping for the best but if anyone has any insight in the meantime, I'd love to hear it.

i run a MBP with 16gb RAM and the Radeon Pro 560 4 GB graphics card, which picks up some of the heavy lifting on video processing. i have never had a problem with audio. in fact, i edit relatively heavy premiere pro, after effects & davinci resolve projects regularly.

that said - when adobe cc processing is going on (mostly rendering video) everything stops. everything. cant open a browser, nada. but this is 4k video processing 500gb prores 422 -- not audio.

adobe cc is a hog. - i do not have that problem processing 4k video out of davinci resolve.

That's encouraging.

I know many use Audition on Mac without issue, just wondering what I'm using that's slowing everything down so much, or if it's that the Air just doesn't have the horsepower, even with an i7. Seems odd since I don't even do any video stuff.

The M1 version shows up today and I see that the Audition Beta with native support for M1 is out, with the full version coming first half of this year.

Fingers crossed it's workable.

While it's always YMMV with these things, I switched from PC to Mac three years ago and bought a new iMac (not with advanced graphics).
REAPER and Source-Connect are rock-solid on it. No crashes.

BUT...

...the machine is so unbearably slow. With Chrome installed or not. Doing anything with files or apps leads to the pinwheel. Thankfully, REAPER isn't affected by this at all. Everything renders quickly, even when working with video for sync.

I've been using an M1 pretty much since it came out with Apollo Twin and it has pretty much run flawlessly. Little hiccups here and there, but nothing show stopping and Audition has run just fine for me. I also only have the 8gb so that 16gb should run even better for more ram intensive stuff.

Just a quick update. I switched to an M1 MBA and love it.

I currently have 2 of them that I bought certified apple refurbished, both are headed back as soon as the replacement gets here. One is crashing 1-3 times per day and quickly restarts, the other has some batter issue from the first boot up.

I'm guessing it's just my bad luck to get 2 in a row with issues but I absolutely love them, save the hardware issues which I'm guessing will be resolved with the next machine.

The difference between the i7 and M1 chips is night and day. The M1 is unbelievably smooth and snappy. Adobe Audition works very well through the Rosetta translation layer but I eventually installed the AA Beta made for the M1 and it works perfectly.

Having no fan is a major bonus and negates complicated cabling required when using the UA Apollo, since thunderbolt is limited to 10 feet. It stays plenty cool and I've yet to be able to get it to slow down. That said, I don't do any hardcore video encoding but I've seen they handle even that quite well from YouTube.

Thanks to everybody for weighing in!

So... I'm updating machines here (iMac and MBPros from early 2000's)

the main non-portable idea is a Mac Mini (replacing an iMac)
and 2 very immaculate several-years old MACbook Pro and MBAir for location work (live classical recordings for a very few clients) replacing the 2004 macbooks on older session files

I had seen strong recommendations that the M1's should be avoided for a while longer and the MacMini is the 2018 pre-M1 version.

your Happy Happenings with teh M1 speak well of going that route...
More info=more confoundment...
