Text from Elisa asking to suggest an inexpensive mic for someone (not voiceover related) who was going to try to produce some audio drama. A Rode NT1A package with cable, shock mount and popshield for around £160 would do just fine. I Went to ebay so I could point them in the right direction; fabby!
Once I had the info I needed I stayed on the site for a while. What was I seeing? The stark reality screaming at me from page after page was the sad remnants of 10,000 voiceover careers launched in March 2020.
My heart goes out to each and every one of them.
What next? I done up an' heard that there's gold in Californee. |

I think they all changed direction and decided that becoming a "social media influencer" was more suited to their egos and didn't seem to have any real barrier to entry (aka ability). YouTube, TikWok, Instathingy, etc. are all absolutely flooded with sub-par ego-driven content from people with a tenuous grasp on reality and an unswerving belief that if they get 500 subscribers, they'll be able to demand free products and payment for endorsement. Sigh. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Sorry indeed, like Illinois is a paragon of virtuous living.
Back to the topic at hand (ahem), it’s sad when people want to jump into our profession with both feet and little preparation. At least with most other forms of endeavor there’s someone between you and the job to tell you you’re not ready yet. That’s why we have our “Where to Start” folder. I think it has prevented many small tragedies, and hopefully launched some stellar careers too.

Why not? It's just talking. Anybody can do that. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

"...with both feet and little preparation."
I'd been hired years ago to produce demos for a fairly well-known VO establishment whose goal it was to both have students record their demo tracks and have me produce it... within an hour.
