In June of 1029 I emailed a prospect. Heard nothing from them since, until an hour ago, when what appears to be a reply to my email (it references the exact subject I used) landed in my Junk mail folder. The email body does not acknowledge my email, but simply reads: "Good Morning, Please see the attached document. Password - 156EG Thank you." There is an attached file titled "request.zip" that is 114 kb in size. Nothing else. The email's return address appears to be valid.
How would you handle this? Thanks. _________________ Mike

that is absolutely an email spoofing and virus installation attempt.
if you search the term "Good Morning, Please see the attached document. Password - " in google you will see the exact same verbiage appear along with warnings from all corners of the internet.
do not open the attachment. maybe reply to the sender to let them know that their email account is either being hijacked or spoofed and to be aware.

Yep, zip files should only be opened from trusted people you KNOW are sending you material. Everything else is a nuke.

also since you sent the original email almost 1,000 years ago --- it's probably not going to turn into anything anyway.

Lately I have been getting email spam from myself - uuuhh apparently. MY address and someone else's name.
I have been offered all sorts of goodies (some that make me go "hmmm"). But, I do know it's SPAM/SPOOF/fish as I didn't send myself anything.
Ahhh, the amazing world of C-19 and people who have lots of time on their hands....

I thought Todd was jokingly exaggerating as to when I sent the original email... until I happened to scroll back to see my keyboard dyslexia on display.
I'll guess you all knew I meant 2019. (I can't believe I didn't catch that.) _________________ Mike

I have an email rule set up to send any email with my name in the "from" line directly to the trash. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

in the past couple months an email list from a data breach has had spammers/hackers sending emails primarily using hotmail. not sure how old that data breach info is but somebody bought the lists and is busy.
additionally since may, another list was used to spam with amazon and google.
it's easy enough to set up a message rule and forward the emails to microsoft, in the case of hotmail or amazon in the other case and also delete the emails so they never make it to your inbox. good news is micrsoft takes those seriously and actually investigates and shuts users down that send them. amazon similarly did this as did google.
squeaky wheels get greased. |
