"Piece of voiceover trivia. All TV promo scripts are in bold black upper case, like being shouted at. All local radio S&P scripts are in crayon. "

I find the formatting to vary wildly. Most of the time I see promo as you describe, with the SOTs in lower case (and sometimes separated along w video cues into another column) and copy in UC. Other times, it's one column with copy in either LC or UC and the SOTs, if provided, in the opposite style. With trailer copy, it's almost always UC with no SOTs or any other indicator of what is happening.

I have heard the use of upper case in copy is a holdover from the days when teletype machines could not do lower case, but I don't know whether this is true or not.

Ages ago when I worked as a newscaster we had typewriters that only had capital letters (or they were rigged that way), just like the teletypes.... because EVERY story was an IMPORTANT STORY FROM 76 KFMB NEWS, OR THE 1230 KRIZ NEWS CENTER, OR 55 PHOENIX KOY.

I've had some where they didn't even do that. A new line signified a new sentence.
Others do use commas, but not where they belong. They just throw them in randomly.
And I've previously mentioned these gems from salesman-written copy:

A guy's spot for a farm stand consisted mostly of a laundry list of the produce they had for sale, including "eggcorn squash."

And my favorite was a spot for a paint store promoting ceiling paint and referencing the great painted ceiling of the "Sixteenth Chapel."

Session 1

Radio commercials to be recorded at Orchard FM, Taunton, Somerset, England.

Those present.

Howard - Sales Director
Geoff - Commercial Producer
Philip - Voiceover.

Script 1, line 1

"THERE'S MORE TO SOUTH WEST THAN WHAT YOU THINK THERE ARE!"

Geoff (English) lays into Howard (Australian) with all his mighty might. Air Force, Royal Marine Commandos and Alan the Magic Turtle. 2 people in the control room, one in the VO booth. 475,000 casualties. Mass burials at Musgrove Park Cemetery, Roller Disco and Steakhouse inc for weeks.

Howard explodes into the VO Booth, fuming and with his trousers still in flames. He snatches the script from my blood stained fingers.

I look up at him and calmly say.

"There's more to South West Auto than you think?"

He made no reply and stormed out.

Me n Geoff continue with the recording of several other scripts for several other clients both severally, recordingially and cordially.

Fifteen minutes pass in what seemed like a quarter of an hour.

"New script for you!" said Geoff over the talkback as Howard enters the booth. He squeezes my shoulder, hands me the script and walks out.

Opening line - " "There's more to South West Auto than you think?"

Fast forward 6 weeks and I'm back. Same situation except a new Producer, Tim.

Script 3. Copy dispute.

"Really!" exclaims Tim. Silence from Howard. Tim explains what is wrong. Howard remains silent. Slowly, I read it out loud. Perfectly good English and I say so with a shrug. Howard breaks his silence with a Zen like calmness

"If Philip says it's ok, then it's ok."

The Sixteenth Chapel was, as we all know, the home of those famous Two Corinthians.

Actually, the Cistern Chapel. The ceiling was painted by MichelAngelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni ) between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seasons. In order to execute his masterpiece the reptile worked lying flat on his back (see also - Stormy Daniels). His mask was not to hide his identity from other members of the Rome based Turtle Artist community but to reduce the risk of paint falling into his eyes. Ray Bans and PPE are a late 20th century thing.

Ceiling scenes to be seen include Il Giudizio Universale, the Last Judgement, which clearly shows men being judged. Unlike in real life the judgement comes from God and not their ex-wives Attorneys.

Centre scene of the Judgement we see Mary, Mother of Christ and Jesus who is both clean shaven and clearly a finalist in the Galilee Iron Man Contest. Obviously didn't win because MichelAngelo did not include the Top Prize of a Ford F150 Raptor.

Others in the piece are all SAG-AFTRA members who are glaring at the lead character because they all auditioned for the role and didn't get it. As with the majority of members none earned enough to be able to afford clothes let alone qualify for Health and Retirement.

Shows you what I know. I thought the Cistern Chapel was in Istanbul, and the two Corinthians were from the capital. Not to mention that I was under the impression that the roof of the Sixteenth Chapel was painted by Michael and his brother Angelo, and that they had to do their painting on the ceiling because, as you can see, there was clearly a shortage of canvas.
