I found this interesting: a post on LinkedIn shared by a scientific animation company about a survey of other scientific animation companies operating in Europe and the US. 45 companies surveyed, 23 responses. The question was about the cost of production.
Lowest price for a 60-second video: $6,900
Highest price for a 60-second explainer video: $50,000
Average price for a 60-second MoA (Mechanism of Action) animated video: $23,537. (well....that's very specific).
I always wondered what the actual total cost of production was for various forms of video.
This survey was only of scientific animation companies, so the info is likely only pertinent for that specific field.

It's not hard to imagine what accounts for the low-to-high cost differences, including music, travel, camera number, narration, and so on and so on. I don't think any of us would think twice about those numbers, and yet there are sites out there (I just looked) describing typical one-minute production costs as ranging from 400 to 800 dollars. Good Lord, for what? An iPhone and a teenager?
When I go in for some costing of my business (not always very pleasant, but neither is dental work), it's true that most of my costs have already been laid down (equipment, studio, and the like), but the ongoing costs are perhaps not staggering, but they are mild-vertigo-inducing: connection costs, dues, benefits, commissions, utilities, networking events/coaching, and yes on and on.
I apologize for nothing; and begrudge nothing. (At least in terms of rates--the other aspects of my life are chock full of regrets and grudges.) _________________ Jack Daniel

Not sure one wants to say a video's success is 40% narration and then say that narrators account for 0.01% of the costs, but hey that's just me :) _________________ Jack Daniel

Hmmm, that is their first mistake - VDC. Their second mistake is the pricing method.
The number one job of WE voiceoverists is to get our name (and voices) out to prospective clients. Although VDC is a tool in our box of toys, it is not the only one.
Pricing may or may not be in their "ballpark". A :60 second national TV spot could be priced at several thousand dollars or ore for one VO job. It all depends upon the VOists skills, notoriety, and his/her marketing. If someone in our business can "deliver the goods" for a client there will be more money available.
Going with an "experienced narrator" is always a good idea. It saves clients and customers time and money in the long run. That is the only real gem from the Nanobot Medical ebook.
