If asked either as part of a mail shot (they're not castings) or as a targeted request I will audition if the spec has suggested "my sound" and the fee is enough to support me for at least 1 month. Specific requests are considered on merit/goodwill etc. For the last 2 months I went off piste and auditioned for (within reason) everything (as low as £70) with only one meeting my minimum session fee. Results? NADA!

Whilst I am NOT calling an audition strike I am reverting back to my original stance +

Enough money for 2 months or I would REALLY like to do the job.

I'm old and people want to waste my time. I have a limited shelf life so do not have time to waste anymore.

I do NOT want the following on my Grave Stone

Philip Andrew Banks
Born 28th February 1960
Died
whilst wasting his time
doing yet another audition
for a SH*TE JOB!

You breathe the rarefied air, my friend. It has taken you a few decades to live in it. Enjoy, revel, play. You've earned it.

Yes Philip, you do cruise at a higher altitude than most of us. Yay!

I've gotten to the point, lucky me, where I still audition here and there but only for the big paying jobs or the really interesting jobs that challenge my acting/narrating abilities. My success rate is pretty low, but when I get a good client I do my damnedest to keep them coming back for more.

Plus I've hit that magic time in my career those 20's and 30's aged male reads just aren't in my wheelhouse any more.

I realised a long time ago that I was unable to influence the outcome of an audition so it was better to focus on the reward should the outcome be positive.

Most auditions are about probable outcome as opposed to possible. Anything is possible but most are improbable.

There is no such thing as a voiceover dream, To stand a chance we need to be awake.

I used to say: "I was living the dream", but in reality it was nightmare.

this is my audition code as well. i am lucky enough (at the moment) to have enough steady, regular clients to keep me (sometimes more than) busy. i know that can change at any moment, so i'm constantly looking for new business, but NOT by auditioning.

*edit - i left out a VERY important word.

I suppose, until you've gotten a job o two under your belt, the temptation is to audition for pretty much anything. Like you chaps, I now audition only for jobs I really want to do, either because they pay well and are interesting, or they pay really well. To audition for a job you don't necessarily want to do seems as foolish as applying to a college you don't want to attend.

If Emmeline Pankhurst came back to life she'd shrug and conclude

"Mmmmm, not quite where I hoped we would be by now."

As I posted on another thread - I turned down an audition yesterday.

To elaborate. I am turning down a LOT of auditions lately for a variety of reasons.

1. The copy sucks
2. The concept is too strange
3. The money is not up to the usage
4. It is not in my wheelhouse
5. The specs say that they are looking for diversity

All that being said, I DO auditions nearly every day for interesting, well-written, decent paying projects.

But the bottom line, is that I have steady repeat work, referrals (2 this week), and direct hits off my website or demos on rosters. These income streams were developed over a long period of time experimenting with cold calls, letters with stamps, emails, social media networking, face-to-face networking, advertising in printed publications,

I am also at an age where I could kick in Social Security as needed, so I am not worried about where the next job is coming from. Not everyone is in that position.
