Liz made such an excellent, well-reasoned point on the marketing topic, I thought it deserved its own thread.
What does success mean to you? Top of your field? Ability to have flexibility in your work and life while meeting financial goals? The respect of your peers? A voice at a particular table?
Something else?

Some days the respect of my peers is paramount... other days you can all take a long walk off a short pier, just give me the money! That sounds facetious (it's not meant to be) - but to some degree, I think we all have moving goalposts. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I think to a degree, the "moving goalposts" is correct in that we all pretty much want to get better at what we do.
But, as I wrote in the other thread, I think that having an overarching idea of what success means to you is helpful in guiding your efforts.
For me:
Quote: | I live on 4 acres of land in the Catskill Mountains doing almost exclusively corporate work.
I live in a house that I love (that's paid off),
in a place that I love, with someone I love,
All my bills are paid, I have money set aside for emergencies and retirement.
I have no desire to live in NYC or LA (Although I grew up in NYC, and it will always be my hometown and I can go in for auditions should the need arise).
I am happy. |
Working with clients who help in keeping me in this space, are most welcome!

Time for another Douglas Adams quote:
"... the only thing to do is to say, "Hang the sense of it," and keep yourself busy. I'd much rather be happy than right any day."
"And are you?"
"Ah, no. Well, that's where it all falls down, of course." _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I could show you if you like as success for me is summed up in photos. The countless photos of the people in my life, each one a Pearl beyond price. |

Looking back, my extremely narrow areas of interest beginning with childhood, while sabotaging on the launch pad any degree of a "normal" social life, proved to be luck... or destiny.
That I've managed to come through the last 50 years without college or any specialized instruction or even any business or marketing skills, doing things that somehow came naturally to me, and having a number of large multinationals and other companies find me and pay me well for it is, frankly, a relief. My "success," of sorts.
However, happiness still eludes me, as I've achieved this success only by a narrow margin; the luck part of my equation. While it is true that money cannot buy happiness, it can buy stability, albeit perhaps only temporarily. And, with stability, one can at least have some comfort.
Thank you for being part of my comfort. _________________ Mike

For me...success would be independence, no longer having to work for hourly wages as an employee, making my living solely as a creative, and with some freedom to set my own schedule.
Happiness is a whole 'nother thing - and due to circumstances it has been in short supply these past few months - but I know it will return over time. In the meantime - focusing on improving chances of success helps keep the greyness away. |

Success is simply achieving personal goals. Once a goal is completed, you can choose either contentment or a new goal.
Rinse and repeat. |

Success is what you make it; as you may already assume from the responses thus far.
For me having the ability live quietly and comfortably without issues and having friends such as the great folks on the VO-BB is a major achievement on the way to my personal success objectives.
Happiness is defined as: "the state of being happy".
Content is defined as: "satisfied with a certain level of achievement, good fortune, etc., and not wishing for more".
I am content.

Success is a word other people use about you after you've spent a long time pushing for excellence that is always just out of reach. It is not the same thing as contentment, though the states may eventually overlap. _________________ Jack Daniel

On second thought.
Y'know it's all about taking things to the next level whilst maintaining self respect for your fellow professional as your journey encourages you to re-evaluate the progress in maintaining balance.
It's ok. I have no idea what that means either. |
