In my opinion (& you can take that for what it's worth!) before you begin any Marketing, you have to figure out the following:

What does success mean to you?

If you want to get to the top of the Animation world like Bob, that will lead you to one way to market.
If you want to live in NYC or LA and do mostly commercial work, that will require another type of marketing.
If you prefer to live outside of those major markets and do mostly corporate work, that's yet another tack.

I live on 4 acres of land in the Catskill Mountains doing almost exclusively corporate work. I live in a house that I love (that's paid off), in a place that I love, with someone I love, All my bills are paid, I have money set aside for emergencies and retirement.

I have no desire to live in NYC or LA (Although I grew up in NYC, and it will always be my hometown and I can go in for auditions should the need arise).

I am happy.

That's success to me, and I market to people who can keep that success going.

So, figure out what success means to you, and Market (aka: Talk!) to people who can help you make that happen.

Smile

I think our little multi-cultural backwater is seeing some ripples. It has to be said... the British mindset towards marketing and marketers is vastly different from the US one. I speak as a Brit who has lived in the US for about twenty-two years now... so I think I have a sound basis for comparison.

To the average Brit (who will never say "Woot" or "Awesome"- EVER) marketing and marketers conjure up an image of...
A 1980s MBA (printed on toilet-paper) from a red-brick university.
A bunch of know-it-alls running around in power-suits (with padded shoulders) acting like they're the saviours of the Western World.
... or failed sociology professors writing self-help books.
The ones who created the cliches forty years ago (The next level etc.)... and then transitioned them into punch-lines for bad jokes about meaningless rhetoric and buzz-words.
The ones Douglas Adams committed to the "B Ark" when the useless third of the population needed to be culled.

This is cultural. To ask anyone to prove the value of what they're selling is reasonable. To sell something where you cannot quantifiably prove its efficacy will always be viewed with suspicion. Hype does not work as well with a Brit. I do not say this in any pejorative way, but Americans are demonstrably far more susceptible to perceive value in something unquantifiable. Brits are not immune... but the cult of personality can be a solid foundation for a business in the US.

Wow Bob Bergen you missed Philip’s point by a mile. He did not dismiss marketing at all, just blindly accepting marketing advice from someone with a glowing pitch and no proof to back it up.... which appears to be the case with most of these alleged “gurus” in “enlightened” California and elsewhere.

Is Philip insulting here with this advice? Not at all. He expressed a reasoned opinion based on experience. Caveat emptor. The insult rests with you Bob, for trashing another professional’s opinion.

I believe Liz nailed it. Find out what success is to you, and market, improve skills, and aim towards it.

Delightful email arrived in my inbox like an innyboxy thing. The key part is here.

"Clearly misunderstood everything you were saying. As clearly the case with whomever he assisted "who had taken your advice to heart." I claim to be in that group as well, but as I've been gifted with a working brain, that advice has panned out wonderfully and allowed me to flourish in my business while also retaining my soul."

Identity and authenticity available on request to respect persons wider privacy.

Do I really care about Bob wrote about me? As it consisted of the Inaccurate, ill-informed or just plain wrong; no not really. Would I prefer to be loved by everyone? Yes, that's human nature but it's not happening.

Do I expect Bob to apologise? No, because he simply wouldn't mean it so there is no point.

We move on to happier things!

To be honest, a lot of my attitude change has happened since I became A grandfather. It really made me do a major re-focus on what's important... and spending my time and money on BS artists who concentrate on appealing to the hard-of-thinking ain't high on the list.

... although, I do enjoy the delicious irony of someone selling Marketing 101 training with tactics straight out of a Marketing 101 self-help book.

It's vitally important that every voice talent uses the services of an appropriate professional to ensure their success in the industry. That's simply VO 101.

Make sure you hire x as your voice coach, x as your vocal health coach, x as your demo producer, x as your marketing director, x as your social media mentor, x as your home studio consultant, x as your business consultant, x as your mindfulness tailored specifically to voice actors master and you will be guaranteed success. Not necessarily because you learned anything, but because you ticked all the boxes to join the inner circle, the clique.

If I could afford to hire a marketing guru, I wouldn't need a marketing guru.

"But hey! Can you afford NOT to, Al?" Sarcastic
