The analog-ers among us will know the feeling. Several decades of wiring together various pieces of ever-changing audio gear in ever-changing configurations have resulted in several boxes worth of various types and lengths of audio (and data) cable, with various connectors, plus an assortment of connector adapters.

It's that feeling that... not long after having hauled it all to the recycling center... the need will arise for at least one of those items.

Ah, what to do.

I'm facing that this weekend. I've promised to thin my herd of cables and such waiting in several boxes and bags. For years now all I've dipped into are my mini USB type connectors. Everything else will never be used again and has just added to my clutter. And if miracles of miracles I need an antique connector I can buy one, cheap!

I remember the hell I'd go through over the years deciding how many of my spare outdated demos on CD and even cassette to get rid of! I've still got a hundred or more tapes from my radio show days back in the last century. I dream of editing them down to the most interesting bits.

Dream on man. Uncertain

I also still have what looks to be between 35-50 padded envelopes for cassettes or CDs. And, before moving here 10 years ago, I had about 150 carts I'd been dragging around for years.

There is always tomorrow.

This is a problem.

Because you know the SECOND you toss, you will need it and then you'll have to buy it again.

I can't tell you how many times that's happened to this guy.

I feel you.

Yes, usually, not long after you get rid of something is when you suddenly have a need for it. But, occasionally, the opposite is true.

In the variety of audio cables I've accumulated over 50+ years, most are different lengths of the familiar twin RCA male-to-RCA male for interconnecting consumer stereo gear. There are also several cables having a different connector at each end (some of which I made myself). And, of course, there are adapters of various configurations also in my collection.

The proper cable to connect a device I'm about to buy with an existing device? Not on your life (a twin RCA male-to-1/4" tip/sleeve male).

I feel your pain. I recently purged the relatively small amount (four large storage boxes) of cables accumulated over the near twenty-five years I've been in the US. I think I was caused physical pain from the anxiety of throwing out a 12-ft DB25 to Centronics parallel printer cable which hasn't been needed for twenty years. I still have a Zip drive and disks that I simply can't just throw away.

They are not mutually exclusive. Both can be true simultaneously. The thing you throw out will be needed the day after you dispose of it; the thing you keep will never be needed (until, of course, the day after you finally decide to toss it).
