For those who didn't know today I exchanged one decade for a new one, my 60s.

What was to happen on this auspicious day? Get up, Collie walk, coffee, shower, dress, Collie walk and work. Celebrations are planned for next weekend.

At some point after 9am while I was still unshaven, unshowered and resembling an unmade bed there was a knock at my door. POSTMAN PAT!

No.

Two of my dearest friends got out of bed at stupid o'clock in the morning, boarded a flight from London Heathrow, flew to Aberdeen, got into a rental car then drove to Portgordon. Were I gifted the sky and all the stars in it the loving gesture could not have been surpassed. My job brought both these people into my world.

Cue booth shot!

Having made the great ascent the breathless 63 year old Yorkshireman finally stood at the foot of Glastonbury Tor. Sitting by a fire near a modest dwelling made of dawb, old stone and Dragon's teeth was the village Wise One.

"I saw your torch, Did you run all the way from Butleigh Cottage Hospital?" Asked Merlin. Monty nodded as he wheezed. "What news?"

The moon cast long shadows and illuminated the faces of the two men. Merlin was handed a piece of paper. Monty nodded sadly.

"At 1030 pm on the 28th of February 1960 a boy weighing 8lb 7oz was born to Barbara and Monty Banks" Merlin could not control himself and the tears began to flow.

"What?" asked Monty "Tell me!" There was an unusual kindness in his voice for a Yorkshireman.

"No good will come of this, sorry" said Merlin wiping his eyes. He then proceeded to pour two glasses of Guinness and handed one to his visitor. "Sit down for a while."

After a long swig of Guinness Monty took Merlin by the hand and gave it a friendly squeeze.

"No GOOD will come of this, eh?"

Merlin looked and shrugged. Monty put his arm around Merlin and whispered in his ear.

"It's genetic!"

Well into the early hours of the morning all across the Somerset levels the sound of laughter could be heard.

Mmmmm ... how was it? I saw a recent story on bars that specialize in very “aged” liquors and liqueurs and their often unique tastes. I had some 30 year old B&B years ago and it was a treat.

Matty (Matilda) had hers with about 4 chunks of ice while I simply added about the same amount of water to the whisky. Same Whisky, two completely different experiences. Both delightful!

Theory. Even the tiniest amount of water will open up the flavours of a good single malt Whisky. Ice tends to lock flavours in. We both tried each others and concluded that neither way was bad simply different.

Heads this morning? Clean and clear.
