Which of you are either current or former radio guys?

I spent 29 years in radio and that got my attention.

For the first ten years I was voice affected. Crank up the headphones and hear how cool you sound. Then I lowered the volume, became more comfortable with me, which progressed me to mornings in Seattle, and more focused on what I was doing rather than how I sounded. Thatís a key right there. Focus on the material and forget you.

Then I went to Miami, and did mornings there where we had NO headphones. Mornings was almost all talk so I had a producer and I didnít have to touch anything but a mic. And we had an overhead monitor, which allowed me to hear everything. It was that environment that allowed me to be totally me, not conscious of anything but being animated in relaying what I wanted to say. I did that for 18 years so that cured me of listening to me.

When I trained with Nancy Wolfson, she said I still had some radio in me but it was more volume and projection than puking or announcing. She used to tell me all the time, ďRick, volume is NOT your friendĒ.

So maybe in that are a couple of clues, with the latter, volume, maybe being your problem. Once she got me focused on that and I started listening to the pros, I found that the majority of TV spots are done close to a whisper. I think realizing that volume was NOT my friend, has paid more dividends than anything else Iíve been taught. If you haven't dealt with that, it can be a game changer.
