Just spent a delightful couple of hours adding the narration to a wildlife (natural history) documentary.

Director "Philip, do what you do best"

Elderly and frail man "You mean nothing much at all?"

Director "Exactly!"

Lacking performance skills is an actual "Thing"

I once approached Marice Tobias for coaching and she simply yelled

"Back off! I have Mace!" Demonstrating wisdom beyond her years.

Imagine how much you could charge people to teach them that.

as an aside, thanks to the gubment's CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) i am an expert in not growing wheat, not growing corn and not growing soybeans --- as a matter of fact, i am imminently qualified to not grow all manner of crops. if something useful DOES accidentally sprout, i am to kill it immediately.

I must admit some of my best sounding work has come from doing the absolute least. Lack of emoting and "performance" can offer very pleasant results.

In close up film acting it's said you should feel the emotion when you speak, not show it through your face and voice.

Nicely done Philip, that "doing nothing" thing that you do (don't) do.

My LA agent is constantly having to say "Do NOTHING" in his audition requests. Just be...

Dang skippy. Any kind of pushing--even with comedy promo--triggers the death knell. Easy does it, but not because you're trying to be easy.

I still end up trying too hard too often. As Tiger Woods would say, It's a Process.

On the set of the movie "One of our aircraft is missing" a very young Peter Ustinov is approached by the director.

"Peter, what are you doing in this scene?" The young, bemused actor struggles for a reply.

"Er.. um ...well, nothing!"

From the other side of the mock RAF Ops table comes the booming authoritative voice of veteran actor, Hugh Williams.

"Oh no you're NOT young man! I'M doing THAT!"

And in that spirit, the story of the young Jack Lemmon.

George Cukor was directing Lemmon in It Should Happen to You. Cukor kept telling Jack to “do less.” Frustrated after multiple takes, Lemmon finally said “If I do any less, I won’t be doing anything at all!”

Cukor replied: “That’s what I want.”

That's why in VO work the Iranian Double Pause is everything because it's twice as much nothing as a regular singular pause!

I think some mad Scotsman once said "Don't push. Let the words fall out of your mouth."

That was Marlon Brando's motus operandus for decades.
