Hi all! So I recently updated Audacity. This new version does not allow me to hear myself through headphones when recording. I did a lil snooping and on other forums and people are complaining that this is just how their new version works. Anyone know a way around this? And FYI, I am a tech idiot. My Source is not Connected and I don't know an IS from a DN. I don't work from home, but I do audition. And I need to be able to hear my work through the headphones! Thanks!

Tried headphones or monitor from your interface?

What does interface mean? Again, I’m a tech idiot.

Old Audacity just worked with headphones. Updated Audacity doesn’t. And again, many vo pages are complaining that the way it used to work with headphones no longer does.

I’m happy to try my inter our outer face. Just need to know how..,or what any of that means.

Interface: the device used to get your analog audio (directly from your mic or from an analog preamplifier) into your computer. It would be the device you would have to select in your audio software in order for it to record your audio.

The interface would typically be connected to your computer via a USB or Firewire cable. For example, this is the front panel of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface (click the photo to enlarge it). The two jacks on the left would be where your mic (or preamp output) would be connected. On the right is the headphone jack. The rear panel has line outputs and the USB jack.

If, for some reason, Audacity purposely disables your computer's audio outputs while recording, preventing your headphones from working, you should be able to use the headphone jack on your interface, as Eddie suggested.

Let's go a few steps further:

How is the signal from your microphone routed to the computer (name each device the signal goes through to get into the computer)?

Where have your headphones been connected all along, and do they work on playback (just not during recording)?

What Mac operating system are you using (if unsure, click on the Apple icon far left on your menu bar and select "About This Mac.")?

This will give us a better understanding of your system configuration.

It's been a while since I've used Audacity, but seem to recall one of the two settings showing below needed to be checked off to get audio to get back to headphones while recording (thinking it was 'Software Playthrough')

Bob, didn't you have a Shure PG42 USB?
That has a headphone jack, which is where you should be connected for monitoring. Otherwise, you'll be hearing yourself in a delay if you monitor via Audacity.
