At the beginning of the session when introductions are being made write down the names of everyone in the booth on your script. Underline the engineer and the director's names. Then at the end of the session thank them all by name.

Oh, and never offer suggestions on copy changes unless asked.

Must respectfully disagree with this.
Part of my Value Added is that I understand grammar and syntax and can help untangle thorny passages with gentle rewrite suggestions.

It begins with a question like: "May I ask about paragraph 5 sentence 2?"

This way, I diplomatically find out if it's a mistake of the writing, or of my interpretation.
If there is a sticky spot, I'll explain where a problem may be and have a suggestion ready.

I understand the brick wall of a script that has "gone thru legal" and have ways of making indistinct pronouns or tortured structure work anyway.

But I have found mistakes in Chemistry texts, and have unwound and stremlined pretzelled sentences to the benefit and delight of many clients.

My job is to make it simple for the listener to understand. My mastery of the English language is the added value.

And, I have been at this a while.
I've apparently managed to establish a rep.

Point made.. My suggestion was from mainly dealing with creative writers. They can be very protective of their work and may bristle at un-requested suggestions. In my experience, it's best to know your place.

I've used Dierdre's technique of asking a question about the copy rather than saying "I have a suggestion" or "you messed up." Not often, as I usually deal with brief and highly polished copy, but they've appreciated it when I've clarified a troubled sentence or pointed out a missing word in this way.

As with most things, it's all about attitude and respect.

This is why I'm not a writer. I keep leaving out important details. The situation I'm advising on is actual copy change and not typos or grammar. Say for instance the copy is over written and they need to cut script. This is when you stay quiet. Or when they realize some of the words are clunky when spoken aloud. Stay quiet and let them work it out. Millions of dollars could be on the line and the wording need to be effective. They are the experts in this realm.

This obviously does not pertain to animation or character driven spots where improvisation is encouraged.

I’ve been lucky enough to have worked long enough and well enough with a couple of writer/producers that I could occasionally say in a session, “who wrote this stuff?” We’d laugh, fix the copy and move on. But yes, that’s a rarity.

a. did you *@#% this copy up so bad on purpose?
b. your 3rd grader has a real future in copy writing
c. as a "plan b" i can just spit out random words, i think that would be better.

Best and loudest laugh ever resulted from the following exchange.

"Philip, we all liked that one very much but we'd like to get another pass from you, ok?"

I sighed and very long affected sigh and in an extremely fey voice replied.

"No. I grow weary of your nonsense!"

Sheri, head of overall overallness managed to catch her breath to make the following comment.

"YOU ASSHOLE!"

I have to put up with treatment like this on an almost daily basis! SO not deserved!
