Here’s an interesting article about how women’s voices have been thought of and treated since technology helped us all spread the spoken word. There’s a lot of science, pseudo science, unmitigated bullshit, and long held prejudices exposed in this piece.

As I have often done over the decades I apologize for the shabby way my male predecessors have treated our female predecessors, and can only add how glad I am that technology and attitudes are rapidly changing and improving for all.

Back in the day, when I studied telecom engineering, the prof for the signal processing section pointed out exactly what this article does -- that "cutoffs" hurt the perception of women's voices. He said that it could have been easily fixed, but nobody considered women as credible voices.

By some accounts, some still think we aren't credible. :(

I was at a VO event this past weekend and a guy on a panel (A manager) actually STILL said that "Women aren't hired for Trailer work because of technical reasons"

Really? Still? Oy. Get Lost

Oh and Todd....did you say something? Kiss Wink

Times they have a changed! There have never been more opportunities for women in vo in the history of broadcasting than today. Each network has contracted women promo announcers. Award shows, which used to be make dominated more often than not hire women.

But we cannot blame the players today on the behaviors and business practices of yesterday. I also feel that the pendulum needs to swing more towards the commons sense of the middle. Just like I don't think producers and buyers should deny hiring talent based on race, age or sex, I don't think they should be forced to hire based on race, age or sex. All actors should have the opportunity to compete, but buyers should also have the right to hire whom they feel is best for the part.

I have experienced agism throughout my entire career. When I first got in at 18 I was told I was too young, as this was a 35 and over industry. Today, for many projects I am told I am too old. Oh, the irony that throughout my entire career I could not escape the issue of age.

But I also don't dwell on it. I still feel buyers have the right to hire whomever they want. Even though I have been aged out for some characters I had voiced for over 20 years, and even though I know my voice has not aged out, I still respect the buyer's right to move on. I just don't have the time to invest in being bitter about what is not in my control. And, I respect their right to choose whomever they want.

Many union actors have been fighting for IMDB to stop posting an actor's age. I feel this is a wasted fight. We are living in the information age. If not on IMDB, that info is just another click away elsewhere. Plus, all one has to do is the math. If our ages are not listed, the release year of our credits are. When time is money, if a buyer assumes I'm too old for a part based on how long I've been in the business, so be it!

Bottom line, there are more opportunities today in vo for everyone!!
