My studio monitors (M-Audio CX5s actually) have what feels like a sticky residue on the front (rubbery part) of both monitors.

What causes that and more importantly, how to clean it?

They make wipes for that. Check your local computer store.

Ask the professionals:

Now seriously, here's some advice, and it must be good, they speak with a Scandinavian accent:

My apologies; I certainly don't mean to sound "stuffy" but, I've been using loudspeakers for, well... longer than I'd care to admit, and have never encountered anything but surface dust on them. I cannot imagine what in a loudspeaker might create a sticky residue, apart from, say, a leaky component in the amplifier. But I'm guessing the amp would not be physically located where a leak would get onto the outside of a speaker. As this sticky residue is on both of your speakers – if it were me, I would contact M-Audio.

I had something similar occur to a rubber coating on the body and grille of a microphone which got very sticky. Evidently an environmental issue with some rubber that causes 'reversion' of rubber'.
https://www.polymersolutions.com/blog/stickiness-insulting-reality-rubber-reversion/
I attempted to clean the stickyeness off, but nothing would cut it apart from solvents that would have stripped the paint.
The manufacturer of the mic is willing to send me replacement a body and grill for free (I pay shipping).
If the rubber is the the cone part of the monitor, probably best to contact the manufacturer.

I recently had this exact problem with the casing around a camera remote shutter release. It had been sitting unused for a few years. I used isopropyl alcohol and it lost all it's tackiness with no detrimental effect on the underlying structure.
