Didja ever stop to think about how much money is made BY voiceoverists versus how much money is made FROM voiceoverists?

If I'm selling studio gear, recording software, source connect, masterclass instruction, seminars, A KILLER DEMO - I have a growing, insatiable market ready to spend big bucks chasing a dream. Business is good.

If I'm an agent, I can still convince people that the only way to book business - excuse me - get auditions, is to have a super agent and be in the union. Of course, you'll pay for that prestige, too. Remember, any business - especially non-union - derived directly from a client just isn't as good.

But no place on earth can a voiceoverist hope to thrive and proper - even those with super agents and united unions - without making the crucial investment in voice-voices123overplanet.com And, the more the better if you are looking for big time ROI.

As you can see, despite what you may have heard, voiceover is indeed a lucrative industry.

Old business model:
1) Have the ability to communicate verbally by stringing a couple of words together in such a way that some people find engaging.
2) Practice until that becomes at least a sentence or two.
3) Equip yourself and try and get paid for it by talking to people who buy that sort of thing.
4) Get a good reputation for what you do.
5) Get paid more, and more often.
6) Buy massive yacht.

New business model:
1) Get on social media and proclaim yourself an expert.
2) Blog, post aphorisms, and cultivate your aura of expertise.
3) Build a sycophantic fan-base using Marketing 101 techniques.
4) Having established your position of authority in the VO business, monetize it by selling your services to other VOs.
5) Buy massive yacht.

As long as we all end up with a massive yacht.
Or, if you prefer, a private jet.
Or both. If you've rigorously followed the model, you shouldn't have to choose.

I know we've mentioned this before, but the people who consistently made money during the California and Yukon gold rushes weren't the miners but the merchants who sold picks and shovels, and gold pans, and food and pots, and Levis and floppy hats. A legit line of work.

Now I don't remember hearing about companies like Miners123 or Such-A-Lode selling mining claims to the unwary just below the much bigger, better paying claims upstream.... I don't know if that's true but I'm pretty sure that it happened.

I think the difference is that when a miner bought a shovel or a pick, he had a clearly defined use for it. What's more, the tool could be demonstrated to break ground or dig a hole. The only sticking point was that the miner had to decide where to apply the tool.

The problem here is that VOs are being sold stuff that may, or may not, be a useful tool... it may look like a pick, but if it's made of lead instead of iron, it ain't gonna do the job.

The real difference is, once the miner bought the tool, he had to go prospecting, do the work, and still had no assurance that he was going to make money, even if it was the right tool and he was a skilled miner or was digging in the right place. But the guy who sold him the tool had the money in his pocket, regardless of what happened to the miner(s).
