Half of my active v123 inbox is filled with NFP work

Question: aside from the warm fuzzy feeling that I'm making the world a better place, juxtaposed with that other warm fuzzy feeling that I'm hungry and my fridge is empty, is there a purpose to working on these?

In your much wiser opinion, do unpaid gigs like these often lead to paid ones?

Thank you kindly

-Ian

The only time I've leant my voice for free to a non-profit group was if I had a direct reason such as I felt deeply about the organization, or an agency or producer who had hired me for other work asked for the read as a favor. There has to be a soul satisfying or potentially wallet satisfying reason to give it away for free.

To do it because V123 wants me too? Expletive no!

I've done quite a few PSAs at union scale of one quarter of pay for a year's worth of use.

Bruce nailed it. If someone wants something for nothing, then the least I expect is personal contact and a polite request... and then I can make a decision based on whatever I'm going to base my decision on.

as i have explained many, many times: non-profit is a tax status, not a business plan. i work with a LOT of not-for-profit organizations - they have a TON of money - like a really, really, really lot of money - which is why i work with them --- because of their really, really, really big pile of money.

and did i mention the money?

***and, yes, i do free stuff as i like also.

Clear rule for me. I will work for nothing as long as no one is getting paid.

"Well, ya see I get expenses"

"So it's ok to bill you for my studio?"

Cue .....

Todd said it.
Non-profit does not mean no money. It actually means they HAVE to spend the money that they get in grants and such. It's part of the agreement. In fact if they don't spend it, many times they do not get as much money next time the grant comes up for renewal. So they have a really good incentive to spend. (Interestingly, if they do end up spending all their grant money, many times the next grant will be even larger -- more incentive!)
