I was lucky enough to be in dozens of recording sessions in the studio of engineer Jack Miller in Phoenix over the years. He is responsible, along with producer Lee Greenwood, of coming up with the "twangy" guitar sound of 1950's rock 'n roller Duane Eddy. Jack didn't have an echo chamber, a large closet sized box with slinky-type strings hanging in it, but there was an abandoned gas station across the street from his studios. They ran a microphone and a speaker over the road at night to an empty 2,000 gallon tank, ran Eddy's guitar through the speaker and returned the reverberated sound back through the mic. A sound and a star were born.

Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy

Jack also recorded a couple of tracks with with the Beatles and the Stones during a stint in California back in the 60's. He was an amazing and modest fellow. I asked him how it was to work with the Beatles. "They were very nice", was about all he would say.
