Great, Todd! If I remember correctly, I've responded that way to similar requests.

Also, I had one request over 10 years ago, where a client wanted me to replace the narration done days earlier by someone else simply because he pronounced "association" differently than they would've liked. I can't imagine why they didn't just ask him to do a pickup. But, after discussing their needs and preparing to record, their final instruction was that they wanted me to sound like the narrator I was replacing. I thought they just meant his style. No, they wanted me to SOUND LIKE him.

I declined, saying that I don't do impressions of other narrators, and doubt they'll easily find someone who does.

Congratulations again!

to be clear - this is NOT an audition to replace anyone - it's for a completely different client/industry who just wants this "sound".

This has always been a source of confusion for talents.

When specs say they want this type of voice...too many try to imitate the person.

What they really want is someone different but has the same vibe. It took me a while to figure that out and then do it right.

"Sound like this guy" and "this type of voice" are both kind of vague, but the former can be taken literally. For example, if someone were to ask me to "sound like" the late Hal Douglas, I can do a fair Hal Douglas impression (but wouldn't for commercial/promotional purposes). I don't know how else to interpret that request. When someone says they want "this type of voice," exactly what do they mean? Same apparent age? Same pitch range? Same texture? Very confusing. Smile

And when you made this suggestion, what was their reply?

And did you mention, that guy IS Rick Riley?

(Just asking for a friend)

Just what is your drink of choice that I can send you a bottle of this Christmas?

(Only a person of impeccable standards would include such information with their audition. I vote YOU for Supreme Court Justice)
