Hi everyone

(First of all, there is probably a thread for this, but my searching hasn't come up with much. Sorry.)

My AT headphones have finally bitten the dust. Well, one side works fine but the other side doesn't work at all. I'm completely baffled by what to get to replace them.

I have a tendency to a bit of sibilance so I want to be sure I can hear that.

What are your favorite headphones?

Cheers!
Miranda

My personal favorite (and I believe that of many others) are the Sony MDR-7506 cans. They came out in 1991, and I started using them shortly after. They have excellent frequency response (some will say they lean a little toward the higher frequencies), they cover the ear and keep outside sound to a minimum, I find them very comfortable to wear for long periods and, if you travel with them, they fold.

The only downside I know of is, after several years, the faux-leather covering on the ear pads will begin to flake off into your ears and onto your shoulders. But replacement pads are available that I find to be even better than the original. They are covered in velour and the foam seems to be more dense, so they reduce outside sound even more while slightly improving bass response.

Here are links to both the headphones and the replacement ear pads:

Using the Search function I entered - headphones
And specified the Gear section. There are several threads and this thread appeared to be most helpful:

Thanks Mike

The peeling doesn't bother me - my old ATs do that too. Well, it does bother me, but it isn't a deal breaker. Smile

I'll check out the Sony MDR-7506. I can see them on Amazon and cheaper locally - I'll see if I can pop in and listen to them.

Thanks Bruce. I didn't find that thread, though I didn't specify the gear section. It looks like the Sony's are highly regarded.

I'd go with a good pair of earbuds these days if I used cans.

I'm on my fourth set of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's.

When the current set wears out, I'll get another.

I like the Shure in-ear bud series

Crazy clear sound, plus, the sony 7506’s would often make clicking sounds fof me, fall off my head, etc. the Shure IE 315’s never do. I got em used on craigslist for like $180. 215’s are pretty much as good and cheaper.

Off the beaten path but my $.02

AKG K141 studio's...bought a pair 15 years ago, great full rich sound.

Unfortunately, they don't make 'em anymore but I found another pair for sale on ebay and snapped 'em up as a back up just in case my original pair goes at some point down the road.

Are you sure it's not just the 1/4 adapter (plug)?
I've gone through a ton of these over the years.

I'll echo the Sony MDR-7506's

I have high end headphones and cheap earbuds. Honestly, the Sony's have the best price/performance combo I've seen.

I now understand why they're used so much in the entertainment industry by professionals who do sound work.

If you're editing/mastering your voice work ... you probably shouldn't be using headphones, but studio monitors. If you *have* to use headphones, you want the most neutral and flat sound as possible.

While the Sony's aren't the most neutral, as they do tend to accent high frequencies a bit. If you use them enough you can learn to take that into account.

Sony Pros:

1. Fairly inexpensive
2. Well built
3. Comfortable
4. Fairly neutral
4. Closed back, good for in-studio recording

Sony Cons:

1. Not the most neutral, but fairly neutral
2. Can be a bit large for someone with a small head
3. Cords can't be unplugged from earcups
4. The leather earcups can break down over time and need replacement
