Sunday afternoon, flying (as passenger) back from London. I found myself sitting next to a 9 year old girl, Keeley.
"What's happening?"
"Do you really want to know?" I replied. She did so as we taxied, took off and did other flying stuff I explained what was going on. Lovely child.
The seats in front of us were occupied by a 40 something couple. Husband near window, wife, aisle in front of me. She was reading a book while husband was listening to something using headphones.
As I chatted with my new friend I noticed that husband was turning his head to listen to my flight commentary. Wife simply read. Eventually husband removed headphones and turned his right ear in my direction. I don't think he was taking notes. Wife simply read her book.
I told Keeley about the effect of clouds, talked about the shapes and sizes, where and when to look for the ground and why the aircraft behaved in a certain way when we flew through them.
Husband was nodding with interest. Wife simply read.
Keeley explained to me what she was seeing and what she had seen.
I smiled.
"So you've looked at clouds from both sides now"
Husband didn't blink.
Wife burst out laughing and dropped book. |

Speaking of both sides... Though it was written by Joni, it was Judy Collins who first recorded it, scoring a hit with the song in 67, and giving a big boost to Joni's songwriting career. Joni, who wouldn't record the song till the following year, reportedly hated Judy's version.
Oh my God, I sound like some Saturday morning hits parade, don't I? _________________ Don Brookshire
