So I have ZERO knowledge of voice overs on the road, but I will likely have some this year. My question is this, if you are on vacation and a client has a gig that cannot wait, do you have a vacation rate? Like 1.5 x $? Maybe this is just cutthroat on my part or ignorance, or both, but this did come to mind and I was wondering if this was a common practice or frowned upon? I just want to pull the party line on this.

Thanks!

You never actually have vacation as a sole proprietor.

imho - you're either working or you're not working. i can take my record-o-matic & work while "vacationing" or tell my clients that i can do it when i return. now - if the job of a lifetime comes up while i'm out - i'll probably find a studio & get it done. i don't expect the client to pay for that.

This idea is wrong in so many ways. Think about the message it sends to your clients.

Dear sirs, I am willing to trash our relationship by charging usurous rates for my own convenience due to my unwillingness to be available for your needs at your convenience.

If you wanna work...work. My anniversary is next week, and when we get to our destination, i will set my rig up and work. Then go play...Simple as that.

If I am away from my studio for travel of any kind, I am not available during those times. I am absolutely "unwilling" to be available every hour of every day.

I don't even like working on weekends.

I just find a way to do it if I can, either waiting until after or making it happen while I travel. I have a travel setup and also enough contacts around the places where I go that I have a studio to go to. I am not in demand enough (damn it) that it is ever truly a factor, but I do like not missing any work while I'm gone.

This is never even THOUGHT of let alone done. We don’t charge for banking fees, we don’t charge for FTP transfers or DropBox usage, we don’t charge to store their sessions for a couple of years or more*, we don’t charge for a new backup hard drive, we don’t charge for the extra electricity for a long session....

We don’t do anything that makes the client pause and think we’re a cheapskate or money grubber. We charge a fair rate for our best work and absorb the rest. And if time off is really important we help the client work around it and take the time.

*when backing up to tape, DAT, or CDs took some time and expense we sometimes charged for it, but now that storage takes pennies and seconds of time it would be ludicrous.

A buyer doesn’t give a damn if an actor is on vacation. If you wish to work while on vacation, so be it. If not, get the next gig. But you don’t add to your rate for this. That’s tacky.

I booked a huge campaign that was set to record while on my honeymoon. I decided the 5-6 figures were worth me paying out of pocket for a studio in Maui. Sadly the buyer insisted all actors record in LA. So, I passed. I was willing to give up one day, but not willing to sacrifice more of the trip.

But I rarely if ever work while on vacation. At least not for a random session fee that doesn’t come with subsequent payments. Sometimes ya gotta turn it off and completely recharge.

What's a vacation, anyway?

I tell my clients I'm away and unavailable. If I'm on a traditional vacation (hotel, touring... y'know, stuff normal people do), I do not take my rig... if I'm staying with friends or family... then maybe I will. If one of my clients knows I'm on vacation and has a VO Emergency* I will always try and accommodate them. If I have to rent a local studio for ISDN, they have never had an issue with this being added as a pass-though cost... but beyond that, I make no rate adjustment... do it for you normal rate or just don't do it.

* There is no such thing as a VO Emergency, but if the client thinks it is, then it is to him.

Oh FFS! I DIDN'T FIGHT TWO WORLD WARS ......I admit.

It's this kind of petty minded attitude that brought down the rather charming and witty democratic leader of Uganda, Idi Amin.

"Dadda, you must work today! Political enemies don't mysteriously die in car crashes from Crocodile bites without a little creative input y'know!"

Dadda, the President would think for a moment, realise it was his day off and decapitate the impudent flunky. Did he charge extra for creative input, team management and his machete skills? No!

We MUST behave in the same way.

The above career advise is copyright Philip Banks.
