Howdy. Can anyone offer some advice on quoting VO for 10 in-store videos (500 total words) for a product featured in Best Buy USA stores.

To me this is a national spot (1000+ stores), but retail is dying Shocked

They also would like a separate quote adding online usage.

Thanks in advance for the input!

Since it doesn't go on broadcast or cable TV it's not considered a spot. It is however a narration that is offered to the general public. In union terms it's a Cat. 2 narration at $446.50 (plus P&W) for up to an hour of your time per video. As this is likely a non-union job you could work out a bulk rate to do all 10 videos at one time. But don't skimp a lot. This is Best Buy, a huge company.

Thanks for the clarification Bruce! It would be all 10 short videos at once. I was thinking a lot more, def in the 4 figures. Also, online use is pretty significant.

not arguing with bruce personally - but we have got to look at the term "spot" differently, i think. broadcast is dead - i truly believe we are the last generation where it will be a major factor. cables are cut - we are consuming content in a much different way - our kids certainly are. a "spot" in the right place on "the web" will likely get more eyeballs than the same piece "aired" in the middle of "the view". it's an education, for sure. i buy spots for a client - a regional auto group. outside of local weather within the local news - i don't buy tv at all.

A couple different ways you could bill it. What Bruce said which, when it's all said and done, would be about $700. They have you for an hour and they can use you as much as they want, as long as it's within the realms of the same project.

Or bill per video. A base rate of, pulling a number out of my rear, $500 per video up to ten minutes finished length.

Agreed Todd. Having worked in radio for 20 years, I've seen the struggles - they're hanging on by a thread. I always look at the scope of the project and the size of the company. Philips and Best Buy aren't small fries. Even though it's only 500 words spread out over 10 videos, it's all about the audience. IMHO, 1000 stores, social media and web is a national client and will be billed as such.

Well web use certainly adds another dimension to the audience size and rate.

I'd push the concept of this being 10 videos not one session if you can.

Actually, this would fall under the theatrical industrial use of the commercials code. $505.04 for 30 days use. I believe that would be per video. I can check. I think there's a 21 months use too. That's just for the in-store.

And as with all union scale rates you have to add another 30-40% to get what the producer actually pays.

Do you mean paid pre-roll? that has the same kind of separate price point as a TV ad.

I've done similar work. For instore I use my regular narration rate of .27/minute or $200 whichever is greater per vid for 6 months.

For online usage BB would probably want a buy out. Ask their budget. If they don't know Go 3x [per vid] for a year. Realistically how long would these videos be relevant beyond a year? If they are renew each year at the same rate or buy out in perp. for 5x

I wonder really HOW different things are... while indeed there ARE new ways to do things, a LOT of what I see on my laptop (HULU VIMEO even YOUTUBE) seems to episodically do what TV always has... either PREFACE your content with a classic ad (either skippable or not) ... and/or then show you some content, then break it for an ad, then back to content wash-rinse-repeat.

Bruce quoted it spot on. It's a Cat 2 Industrial job. And whomever is hiring the talent for a Best Buy in store video production already knows that.

Me too..

But please don't forget the numbers being quoted here for union jobs are minimums...this is the floor, not the ceiling. On jobs with no residuals, such as this, non-union fees are often higher than these skimpy union paychecks.
