GOOD DAY !
I have been wanting one and am saving secretly without my wife knowing for the 416. I need an alternative to the 416. I am not yet in the income bracket to just order one like that. But I need to have a shotgun handy. For me the most important is low self noise and quality of sound. Help if you can. thanks !

I've been told that the Audio Technica AT875 short shotgun condenser mic has a very similar sound to the Senn 416.

This isn't from personal experience, mind you, but it is from a gear head who knows his stuff. Smile

Here's a not very secret secret, most questions about the 416 shotgun have been asked and answered here on the VO-BB. Here's what you do to find those answers:

Go to the Search button up top and click it

Enter into "keyword": 416

In the Forum box select: Gear

You'll get a view of dozens of threads that discuss the 416. For example, five threads down you'll find this one which discusses an exciting sounding alternative to the 416.

http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19534&highlight=416

You're always welcome to ask questions here, but you'll probably get your answer sooner by doing a Search through our archives.

Another nice one is the AT4073a, but it's not all that cheap.

Beware of fake 416's. Here is a good site to show you what to look for.

I second (or third?) the motion on the Audio-Technica AT875R.

I already have a 416 but decided to purchase it (based upon souodgun's -George- recommendation.for those times when I didn't want to risk a 1K microphone.

Very pleased.

No complaints.

I'm working with an AKG 451/ck8 ... not sure that counts as a 'less expensive' ...

For VO, it's kinda boomy and muddy to my ears. I bought one thinking it would be a good option instead of the 416. At the time it was slightly cheaper (this was before everyone started offering regular deals on the Senny) and it felt nicely patriotic.

Now I have the 416 and the NTG3 is the mic on my control room desk outside the booth. Just use it for chatting and directing talent in the booth.

I did a search on this site and found several references to the Rode shotgun and a few seemed to like it for VO. YMMV.
